Titans Finish Third At Tight WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh owned five of the top 21 runners as it finished third at the WIAC Men's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Nov. 2) at the Kilkarney Hills Golf Course in River Falls.

UW-La Crosse scored 53 points to earn its second straight team title and 32nd overall. Second-place UW-Eau Claire with 58 points and third-place UW-Oshkosh with 66 followed the Eagles. UW-Oshkosh won the title in 2011 and finished sixth a year ago.

UW-Stout captured fourth place with 110 points, UW-Platteville fifth with 138 UW-Stevens Point sixth with 152, UW-Whitewater seventh with 207, UW-Superior eighth with 223 and UW-River Falls ninth with 233.

Sean Kutz, who finished fifth at the meet in 2011, led UW-Oshkosh with his fourth-place time of 24:45. The Titans' Derek Johnsrud took sixth place after completing the 8,000-meter course in 24:48.

Also scoring team points for UW-Oshkosh were Jordan Carpenter, McKena Ramos and Erik Hofferber. Carpenter finished 17th in 25:14, while Ramos placed 18th in 25:16 and Hofferber 21st in 25:23.

Other UW-Oshkosh runners finishing in the top 50 were 24th-place Ryne Scopp in 25:39, 34th-place Kenny Halloran in 25:59 and 41st-place Mike Foust in 26:09.

The Titans also had Matt Champan finish 51st in 26:23, Tyler Miletti 75th in 26:35, Mitch Pauers 62nd in 26:46 and Joe Zack 75th in 27:14.

UW-Stout owned both the first and second-place runners. Patrick Jenkins won the race with his time of 24:32, while teammate Jessop Keene finished second in 24:37. UW-Platteville's Sam Proser took third place in 24:44 and UW-Eau Claire's Ryan Mugan fifth in 24:46.

A total of 102 runners completed the race. The top seven runners received All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eight through 14 earned All-WIAC second team accolades.

UW-La Crosse's Josh Dedering received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award at the championship.

All nine WIAC teams will return to action at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Nov. 16 in Rock Island, Ill. The NCAA Division III Championship is scheduled for Nov. 23 in Hanover, Ind.
