Titans Win Five Events On The Track, One In The Field

Victories in five individual events and one relay earned UW-Oshkosh a second-place finish at the Phil Esten Men's Track & Field Challenge held Friday (April 18) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse captured the team title with 221 points, while UW-Oshkosh scored 130 and third-place UW-Stout 104. Wartburg College (Iowa) finished fourth in the 12-team meet with 92 points and UW-Eau Claire fifth with 90.

UW-Oshkosh picked up five of its first-place finishes on the track. Winning efforts went to Naji Allan in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.80, Matt Lawrence in the 800-meter run at 1:55.35, McKena Ramos in the 1,500-meter run at 3:48.59 and Corey Wilch in the 400-meter hurdles at 52.41.

The Titans also won the 1,600-meter relay as Wilch, Brian Beaudo, Mike Servais and Reid Zanoya combined to register a time of 3:17.85.

In the field, UW-Oshkosh's John McCann won the high jump with a leap of 6-6 3/4.

UW-Oshkosh had a pair of second- and third-place finishes. Ranking second were Wilch in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.96 and Jonathan Jordan in the long jump with a hop of 23-2. Taking third were Kyle Schueller in the long jump with a distance of 22-4 1/2 and Joe Brunner in the hammer throw with a mark of 193-3. Schueller also finished fifth in the triple jump with a skip of 44-7.

The Titans' Jeremy Brandt threw to fourth-place finishes in both shot put and hammer competitions. He recorded measurements of 52-7 1/4 in the shot put and 172-3 in the hammer throws.

UW-Oshkosh's sixth-place listings belonged to Zachary Baehman, Mike Heinz and Effa Hunter. Distances of 51-3 1/2 were by Baehman in shot put, 154-10 by Heinz in the discus and 21-1 by Hunter in the long jump.

Finishing seventh for the Titans were Servais in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.49, Scott Heinz in the discus with a throw of 154-4, Cole Myhra in the javelin with a mark of 133-9 and Dan Trimner in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.36.

Nick Grosskopf contributed a pair of eighth-place finishes for UW-Oshkosh. He threw the shot put a distance of 50-4 1/2 and the hammer 165-10.

Next weekend, UW-Oshkosh athletes will be competing at the Drake Relays on April 24-26 in Des Moines, Iowa, Gina Relays on April 24-26 in Hillsdale, Mich., and the Jeff Miller Drake Alternative Meet on April 26 in Whitewater.
