Blugolds, Eagles Shut Down Titans

The going was tough for the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team as it dropped 9-0 decisions to both UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse on Saturday (April 18) in Eau Claire.

In UW-Oshkosh's opener, UW-Eau Claire (17-6) won 24 of 29 games in the doubles competition to set the tempo for the match.

Michael Mauthe and Jordon Stevens spent little time on the court for the Blugolds as they defeated David La Grange and Logan Zastrow by an 8-0 score at No. 3 doubles.

Andrew Dahl and Kyle Hoffmann took the No. 1 doubles contest for UW-Eau Claire with their 8-3 victory over Mike Gillespie and Aidan Sauberlich. The Blugolds' Andrew Rust and Will Weyenberg posted an 8-2 win over Vincent Gorski and Adam Martin at No. 2 doubles.

UW-Eau Claire won five of the six singles contests in straight sets, including Mauthe's 6-0, 6-0 decision over Martin in the fourth flight and Dahl's 6-1, 6-0 result over Zastrow in the fifth.

Hoffmann outscored Gillespie, 6-4, 6-4, to win the No. 1 singles contest.

Other individual winners for the Blugolds were Rust in the second flight, Weyenberg in the third and Conrad Felten in the sixth. Rust defeated Sauberlich, 6-2, 6-3, while Weyenberg ousted Gorski, 6-3, 6-1. Felton outlasted La Grange by a 6-1, 3-6 (10-1) result.

UW-La Crosse (21-3) had to work a little harder than UW-Eau Claire to earn its three doubles victories against UW-Oshkosh (6-14).

Tony Mirasola and Peter Stadum gave UW-La Crosse the win at No. 1 doubles with their 8-6 victory over Gillespie and Sauberlich.

The Eagles then received wins from Matt Bulger and Kyle McGrane in the second flight and Matt Lindsay and Dante Pitera in the third. Bulger and McGrane defeated Gorski and Martin, 8-3, while Lindsay and Pitera ousted La Grange and Zastrow, 8-4.

Like UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse won five of its six singles contests against UW-Oshkosh in straight sets. The victories were led by McGrane's 6-0, 6-0 win over Sauberlich in the second flight and Pitera's 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Zastrow in the fourth.

Stadum earned the win at No. 1 singles with his 6-4, 6-2 victory over Gillespie.

Other Eagles winning contests were Mirasola in the third flight, Austin Stefanich in the fifth and Simon Brandt in the sixth. Mirasola defeated Gorski, 7-5, 6-0, while Stefanich ousted David Leffler, 6-4, 6-3. Brandt edged La Grange by a 1-6, 6-1 (10-8) result.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Madison for a match against Edgewood College on Sunday (April 19).
