11th-Ranked Duhawks Spoil Titans' Season Opener

The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team fell to nationally ranked Loras College (Iowa), 2-1, in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday (Sept. 1) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The Duhawks, ranked 11th in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, scored the match-winning goal when Johnny Rummelhart sent a 15-yard shot past UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Sam Gabrilska during the 77th (76:47) minute of play.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Titans in home openers.

Last season UW-Oshkosh and Loras College played to a 2-2 tie in Dubuque, Iowa.

Loras College's Jorge Simon scored the first goal of the game when he poked in a corner kick from 3 yards out just four minutes (3:58) into play.

JT Heidvogel tied the score for UW-Oshkosh in the 35th minute (34:55) with a smart finish from 5 yards out after a terrific pass from Tyler Howard. The goal came off of the Titans' first shot of the game.

The first scoring chance of the second half came for Loras College in the 49th minute when Rummelhart sent a shot just wide of target.

The Titans (0-1) had the next big chance in the 57th minute when Michael Dugan found space on the right side of the box and sent his shot across the goal.

The decisive goal was scored in the 77th minute. It came after some good build-up play and a fine finish by Rummelhart with an assist from Alex Bradley.

Loras College (1-0) had a chance to make it a two-goal advantage when Mike Gordon had a one-on-one with Gabrilska, who came off his line and made a diving save.

The Titans would find opportunities late in the game to level the score but could not find the equalizing goal.

The Duhawks outshot the Titans, 17-9. Dugan led UW-Oshkosh with three shots. Rummelhart paced Loras College with four shots, including two on goal.

Gabrilska played the entire game and recorded nine saves. Jacob Peterson went the distance for the Duhawks and notched three saves.

Loras College, which advanced to the third round of last year's NCAA DIvision III Championship, had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Titans travel to Salem, Ore., this weekend for matches on Friday (Sept. 4) against Southwestern University (Texas) and Sunday (Sept. 6) against host Willamette University.
