Messerly's Overtime Goal Keeps Titans Unbeaten

Paul Messerly's goal with three minutes left in the second overtime gave the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Augustana College (Ill.) on Tuesday (Oct. 15) in Rock Island, Ill.

Messerly scored his second match-winning goal of the season off a perfectly executed pass from Jan Nachtigall. The 10-yard kick was the only shot taken by Messerly during the 107-minute match.

Augustana College (5-7-1) took the lead in the game's 34th minute (33:46) as Dominick Sullivan scored off a throw in from Michael Buric.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered the contest ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association, then tied the score in the 58th minute (57:38). The Titans (10-0-4) got the equalizer when Nachtigall scored off a long pass from Jacob Hernandez.

Both teams attempted 12 shots, with UW-Oshkosh sending eight on goal and Augustana College six. The Titans recorded a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Chris Kurth and Tony Starnes both launched three shots for UW-Oshkosh, while Kirby Allen fired two. Augustana College was led by the three shots from both Ryan Curry and Fridolin Wernick.

Both goalkeepers went the distance as Tyler Cowherd saved six shots for Augustana College and Sam Gabrilska five for UW-Oshkosh. Cowherd tallied five of his blocks in the first half.

UW-Oshkosh, which has outscored it opponents by a 34-6 count this season, visits Lawrence University on Saturday (Oct. 19).
