Titans Sail Away From Blue Devils In Second Half

Jack Flynn and Adam Fravert led a balanced UW-Oshkosh offense with 15 points apiece, Quinn Steckbauer added a season-high 14 and the Titan men's basketball team pulled away in the second half en route to an 84-60 victory over UW-Stout on Saturday (Feb. 15) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (15-8, 9-3 WIAC) never trailed after reclaiming a 7-6 lead at the 17:49 mark of the first half. UW-Stout tied the game twice during the latter stages of the opening period and cut its deficit to 39-38 with 18:45 remaining in the game, but the Titans put the game away with a 20-9 run for a 59-47 cushion and maintained a double-digit advantage for the last 11:15 of the contest.

The defending NCAA Division III and conference champion Titans are still alone in second in the league standings while UW-Stout (5-18, 1-11 WIAC), which lost its 10th consecutive game, remains eighth. UW-Platteville (20-3, 10-2 WIAC), ranked eighth in the country by D3hoops.com, has a one-game lead over UW-Oshkosh with two contests remaining.

UW-Oshkosh also defeated UW-Stout, 83-69, in Menomonie on Jan. 11 and has won 11 of the past 12 meetings between the teams, including each of the last seven.

Flynn shot 6-for-8 from the field and grabbed five rebounds in just 23 minutes of action as 14 Titans received playing time. Fravert went 6-for-11 from the floor and recorded five assists, three blocks and two steals. Steckbauer, who entered the night with 14 points during his freshman season, shot 5-for-8 from the field in 20 minutes off the UW-Oshkosh bench.

UW-Oshkosh had seven players score at least eight points as Levi Borchert had 11, Eddie Muench and Eric Peterson nine apiece, and Will Mahoney eight.

Borchert, the WIAC leader with a .683 field goal percentage before Saturday, shot 5-for-5 from the floor. Peterson collected a team-high nine rebounds while Muench dished out five assists.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the game shooting 55.2 percent (32-58) from the floor, 38.1 percent (8-21) from 3-point range and 57.1 percent (12-21) at the free throw line. The Titans, who shot at least 50 percent from the field for the 10th time this season, owned advantages of 18-9 in assists, 7-16 in turnovers, 6-3 in blocks and 8-3 in steals.

UW-Stout went 23 of 56 (.411) from the field, 4-for-17 (.235) from beyond the 3-point arc and 10 of 12 (.833) at the foul line. The Blue Devils held a 36-32 edge in rebounds to become third team to outrebound UW-Oshkosh over its last 25 games.

TYreese Alexander led all players with 20 points on 10 of 14 shooting from the floor and nine rebounds for the Blue Devils.

Marcus Hill contributed 12 points and six rebounds off the UW-Stout bench.

The Titans, who scored at least 80 points for the 14th time on the year, went into Saturday ranked ninth in the nation with a +9.3 average rebounding margin while also pacing the conference in scoring (82.6), rebounds (42.5) and assists (13.9) per game, blocks (73) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.14). The Blue Devils were forcing a WIAC-best 15.2 turnovers per game but were ranked 413th among Division III's 416 teams at 9.8 assists per contest.

UW-Oshkosh reclaimed its 7-6 lead following a Peterson 3-pointer. The Titans later increased their advantage to 20-10 on the first of Fravert's three dunks in the game at the 11:01 mark of the first half.

UW-Stout knotted the score at 21 and again at 23 with 7:18 left in the opening period before the Titans took the lead for good at 24-23 on a Flynn free throw. A layup from Borchert extended UW-Oshkosh's lead to 39-31 with 96 seconds to play in the first half, and the Titans went into intermission with a 39-33 advantage.

A Jon Ciriacks 3-pointer cut the Blue Devils' deficit to 39-38 at the 18:45 mark of the second half, and an Alexander layup pulled UW-Stout within 48-45 with 15 minutes to play. However, UW-Oshkosh responded with six straight points on a Mahoney 3-pointer and a Fravert three-point play for a 59-47. Muench then drilled a 3-pointer for a 62-50 Titan cushion with 11:15 left, and UW-Oshkosh led by double digits the rest of the way.

Fravert flushed his final two dunks of the night during a span of 15 seconds. A steal led to his thunderous left-handed breakaway dunk with 8:16 left. A subsequent Blue Devil turnover allowed the Titans a two-on-one fast break that featured a Steckbauer pass off the backboard to a trailing Fravert, who forcefully slammed the ball through the rim with two hands to up the UW-Oshkosh lead to 69-52 with 8:01 to go.

UW-Oshkosh owned its largest lead of 24 points when Jake Zeitler hit a 3-pointer that capped the scoring with 41 seconds remaining.

The Titans play their final regular season home game of the year Wednesday (Feb. 19) against UW-Whitewater in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh slipped past the Warhawks, 73-71, Jan. 25 in Whitewater.
