Titans Slay Knights In Home Opener

Charlie Noone and Max Schebel scored 16 points apiece as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team cruised to a 73-52 win over Calvin College (Mich.) on Saturday (Dec. 3) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (3-3) scored the first 12 points of the game and held leads of 22-4 and 42-12 during the first half as the Titans won their home opener for the first time in three seasons.

Noone scored 14 of his points during the opening 11 minutes of the game and concluded the contest shooting 5 of 8 from the floor, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range. He also tallied five rebounds and a game-high four steals.

Schebel had his best scoring output of the year by shooting 7-for-8 from the field while totaling six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

UW-Oshkosh held advantages in field goal percentage (.500 to .327), 3-point field goal percentage (.381 to .217), rebounds (33-23), assists (12-6), turnovers (17-13), blocks (3-2) and steals (8-5).

Brett Wittchow added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Titans, who also received a career-best nine points from Sam Johnson and seven points, four rebounds and five assists from Ben Boots.

During the first half, UW-Oshkosh out-shot Calvin College 60.7 percent (17-28) to 23.1 percent (6-26) from the floor on the way to a 44-19 lead at intermission.

The Titans made five of their first seven shots from the field as Jack Flynn gave UW-Oshkosh a 12-0 lead on a three-point play with 15:39 left in the first half.

The Knights missed 12 of 14 shots from the floor and committed six turnovers during the opening 12 minutes of the contest as UW-Oshkosh built a 27-7 lead.

A 3-pointer by Wittchow gave UW-Oshkosh its largest advantage of 30 points at 42-12 with 2:43 remaining in the first half.

Calvin College (2-4) trimmed its deficit to 61-49 with four minutes to play, but a 3-pointer by Boots extended the Titans' lead to 70-50 with 63 second left. A 3-pointer by UW-Oshkosh's Alex Van Dyke provided the game's final score with 19 seconds to go.

Cam Denney paced the Knights with 11 points and four rebounds.

Calvin College's reserves outscored the UW-Oshkosh bench, 27-14, as Matt Trewhella and Michael Welch chipped in eight and seven points, respectively, for the Knights.

Saturday's game marked the second meeting between UW-Oshkosh and Calvin College. The Knights defeated the Titans, 75-63, in Oshkosh on Dec. 20, 2014.

UW-Oshkosh faces Maranatha Baptist University on Monday (Dec. 5) in Watertown.
