Titans Overcome Slow Start To Rout Beavers

The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team brushed off a sluggish start and cruised to a 76-48 win over Blackburn College (Ill.) at the Best Western Premier Waterfront Hotel Titan Classic on Friday (Nov. 21) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (2-1) missed its first 12 shots from the field, but drained 11 of its next 22 to take a 10-point lead to intermission. The Titans limited Blackburn College (0-3) to 27.6 percent (8-29) shooting in the opening period and 31.3 percent (15-48) for the game.

Blackburn College jumped out to an 8-2 lead before Sean Dwyer made UW-Oshkosh's first field goal with 14:38 remaining in the first half. A basket by Chris A. Davis provided the Beavers' largest advantage of the night at 12-5 with 12:51 left in the period.

UW-Oshkosh rallied to take a 16-15 lead on an AJ Mueller layup with 8:51 remaining in the half. The basket was part of a 14-3 scoring run that pushed the Titans' lead to 19-15.

The Beavers knotted the score at 23 on a 3-pointer by Dillon Hensley with 5:04 left, but the UW-Oshkosh defense didn't allow another point in the period as Blackburn College missed its last seven shots before the break.

The Titans scored the last 10 points of the first half, including a 3-point basket by Kyle Bolger, to take a 33-23 halftime lead.

UW-Oshkosh opened the second half with a 10-3 run and led by double digits for the last 21:07 of the contest. The Titans opened up a 20-point cushion on a Dwyer 3-pointer with 9:51 to play. UW-Oshkosh held its largest lead of the game at 76-46 with 32 seconds to play.

Dwyer led the Titans with 14 points on the strength 4-of-7 shooting from behind the three-point arc.

Alex Olson added 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists for UW-Oshkosh, which saw 14 players collect rebounds. Mueller contributed six points, nine boards and four assists, while Brett Linzmeier and Andre Wallace chipped in with eight points apiece.

UW-Oshkosh ended the game shooting 40.3 percent (27-67) from the field, including 39.1 percent (9-23) on 3-point attempts. The Titans shot 65 percent (13-20) from the free-throw line.

Chris A. Davis led Blackburn College with 15 points. The Beavers also received seven points and eight rebounds from Jaime Moore.

Blackburn College converted 29.4 percent (5-17) of its 3-point shots and 72.2 percent (13-18) of its free throws.

The Titans held significant advantages in assists (20-7) and rebounds (51-28).

UW-Oshkosh will play Luther College (Iowa) in the tournament's championship game at 5 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 22) in Kolf Sports Center. The Norse (2-0) defeated Finlandia University (Mich.), 84-73, in Friday's opening game. Finlandia University (1-3) will take on Blackburn College in the consolation game at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
