Top-Ranked Pointers Take Control Of Titans Early

Top-ranked UW-Stevens Point jumped out to a 12-point lead in the first six minutes and never looked back, as it defeated the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team, 70-51, on Wednesday (Feb. 19) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Pointers led 17-5 with 14:03 to play in the first half before Taylor Jansen hit a deep three-pointer to pull his team back within single digits at 22-13.

Good defense and solid shooting put the Pointers up 40-25 at the break. UW-Stevens point connected on over 59 percent of its shots, with the Titans shooting just above 36 percent.

UW-Oshkosh started the second half strong, scoring the first five points of the period on an Alex Olson lay-in and a Dylan Wurtz three-pointer that cut the Pointer lead to 10. The Pointers regained control of the game and stretched their lead to 19 (52-33) with 12:37 to play.

The Titans could not get closer than 12 for the rest of the contest, trailing 58-46 with 5:42 remaining. The Pointers held a double-digit lead for the final 25:57.

UW-Stevens Point continued to shoot the ball well in the second half, finishing the game 28-for-55 to shoot just under 51 percent. The Titans hit 18-of-53 from the floor (34 percent). Both teams struggled from the free throw line, as they hit less than 60 percent of their foul shots.

Trevor Haas led all scorers with 16 points. The Pointers had three more players score in double figures - Tyler Tillema with 13, Joe Ritchay with 11 and Clayton Heuer with 10. Haas and Heuer tied for a game-high nine rebounds.

The Titans were led offensively by Alex Olson with 12 points. Jade Royston scored nine points, Max Schebel added seven and Wurtz finished with six. Schebel paced the Titans with nine rebounds.

Despite the loss, UW-Oshkosh clinched a spot in the six-team WIAC Tournament when UW-River Falls knocked off UW-Superior, 90-77. It is the Titans' first WIAC postseason appearance since 2009.

The regular season finale for UW-Oshkosh is a home matchup with UW-Superior on Saturday (Feb. 22). The Titans fell to the Yellow Jackets, 77-71, on Dec. 7 in Superior.
