Eagles Fly Away From Titans At Finish

UW-La Crosse scored 12 consecutive points in the final two minutes to secure its 62-54 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team on Wednesday (Dec. 11) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans had not led for the entire game until Alex Olson grabbed his own rebound off a missed lay-up and scored to give UW-Oshkosh a 52-50 lead with 2:34 to play. UW-La Crosse responded by scoring the next 12 points, including Calahan Skogman's three-pointer that put the Eagels in front with 0:38 left.

The game started off with both teams shooting as cold as the below-zero temperatures outside of the gym. UW-La Crosse shot 33 percent (10-30) in the opening period, while UW-Oshkosh registered 22 percent (6-27). The Eagles held a 29-20 lead at intermission.

UW-La Crosse (7-1/3-0 WIAC) was able to hit 6-of-15 three-point shots before halftime, and then Luke Tweed's long ball early in the second half put his team up, 34-23.

UW-Oshkosh was able to stay in the game by getting to the foul line. The Titans shot 20 free throws in the second half, making 16 of them. UW-La Crosse managed to get to the charity stripe 12 times in the second half, with eight attempts coming in the game's final minute. The Eagles converted 10 of their 12 free throws.

The Titans finished the game shooting 23-of-31 (74 percent) from the foul line, while UW-La Crosse hit 13-of-18 attempts (72 percent).

The Eagles had what seemed to be a comfortable lead for a good part of the second half until Riley Vander Wyst hit a three pointer with 11:01 remaining to bring the Titans within 46-42. A pair of Dylan Wurtz free throws brought the score to 48-46.

Jade Royston led the Titans with 13 points, including 11 on free throws. Max Schebel added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. AJ Mueller came off the bench to score seven points and collect seven rebounds.

Tweed topped all scorers with 23 points, including four three-pointers. The Eagles also received 11 points from Skogman and seven rebounds from Lucas Collom.

UW-La Crosse sank 9-of-23 three-point shots for a 39-percent rate. Coming into the contest, UW-La Crosse was shooting 49 percent from beyond the arc.

UW-Oshkosh returns to the court when it hosts Silver Lake College on Tuesday (Dec. 17). in Kolf Sports Center.
