Titans, Blue Devils Split Doubleheader

The UW-Oshkosh baseball team took advantage of six UW-Stout errors and overcame a five-run deficit in the nightcap as the Titans and Blue Devils split a doubleheader in Menomonie on Saturday (Aprill 25).

UW-Oshkosh defeated UW-Stout, 10-5, in the second game after the Blue Devils won the first contest, 5-2.

The Titans (18-14, 8-10 WIAC), who had their six-game winning streak snapped in the opener, are two games behind in the chase for the fourth and final WIAC Tournament berth with six contests remaining.

In the nightcap, UW-Stout took a 5-0 lead on consecutive two-out, two-run hits in the fourth inning. Jack Schneider doubled home two Blue Devils, and Nick Nalbach followed with a two-run single to chase UW-Oshkosh starting pitcher Matt Sabel.

The Titans responded by taking their first lead of the day with seven unearned runs on six consecutive two-out hits and four errors in the top of the fifth frame.

With a runner on first and two outs, UW-Stout committed its first error of the game, and John Eagan's single brought home the first Titan run of the game. An RBI single by Luke Gajewski was followed by a two-run double by Tyler Kozlowski and a run-scoring single by Andy BrahierLogan Reckert's RBI double gave UW-Oshkosh the lead, and Jack Paulson's run-scoring single increased the Titan advantage to 7-5.

UW-Oshkosh added three insurance runs in the eighth inning on four straight hits and two errors.

Jacob Pohlman relieved Sabel in the fourth inning and provided 3.1 scoreless innings. Pohlman (2-1), who extended his season scoreless streak to nine innings, allowed two hits and two walks to earn the win.

UW-Oshkosh's Lucas Gregory pitched two hitless innings to secure the victory.

Brahier, Gajewski, Paulson and Reckert each had two of the Titans' 13 hits.

Nalbach had three hits and three RBIs for UW-Stout (16-15, 4-12 WIAC).

Blue Devil starting pitcher Patrick Gullickson (1-2) was charged for the loss after yielding seven unearned runs in 4.2 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

In the first game, UW-Stout never trailed after tallying single runs in the first, third and fourth innings.

UW-Stout starting pitcher Hayden Bowe improved his record to 4-3 after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks in seven innings.

Jacob Frederick relieved Bowe and notched his second save of the year after pitching two scoreless frames.

Hunter Dicus opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning. UW-Stout added an unearned run in the third and upped its lead to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly by Austin Littman in the fourth frame.

UW-Oshkosh closed with 3-2 in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Eagan and a sacrifice fly by Gajewski, but UW-Stout added one run in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Noah Brown paced the Blue Devils with three hits while Brady Burzynski, Dicus and Schneider added two hits apiece.

Peter Jewell (3-4) took the complete-game loss for UW-Oshkosh, ceding five runs (four earned) in eight innings pitched.

UW-Oshkosh plays two games against UW-Stout on Sunday (April 26) in Menomonie.
