Jewell's Complete Game Leads Titans Past Continentals

Peter Jewell scattered nine hits over nine innings to earn his first complete-game victory and help the UW-Oshkosh baseball team defeat Hamilton College (N.Y.), 13-2, on Saturday (March 21) in Auburndale, Fla.

Jewell, who was making his eighth career start, struck out eight batters while allowing eight singles and one double. Jewell (1-1) kept the Continentals to just two earned runs by picking off two of their base runners in the eighth inning and one in both the third and seventh. 

UW-Oshkosh (2-4) tallied 15 hits off four Hamilton College (5-2) pitchers. John Eagan had four hits, Trey Demler three and Robbie Kleman two for the Titans, who also stole seven bases. 

Hamilton College, a first-time opponent of the UW-Oshkosh, had two of its nine hits belong to Zach Becker.

UW-Oshkosh scored its first two runs of the game on double steals in the first and fourth innings. Eagan stole home and Logan Reckert second base in the first inning while Jack Paulson stole home and Noah Polcyn second base in the fourth.

Following a run-scoring single by Andy Brahier in the fifth inning, UW-Oshkosh extended its lead to 6-0 with three runs in the sixth. The Titans' sixth inning featured a two-run single by Eagan.

Hamilton College got two runs back courtesy of two hits and one UW-Oshkosh error in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Continentals scored on an errant UW-Oshkosh throw and a single by Andrew Haser.

After a scoreless seventh inning, UW-Oshkosh extended its lead to 7-2 on a single by Kleman.

The Titans exploded for six runs in the ninth inning to secure the victory. UW-Oshkosh benefited from a two-run triple by Demler, a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Reckert and a sacrifice fly by Kleman.

Daniel DePaoli (0-1) took the pitching loss for Hamilton College. He allowed four hits and two runs before being replaced by Charlie Lynn in the fifth, Jacob Lanzkowsky in the sixth and Ben Goffin in the eighth. Goffin was charged with four hits, seven runs and five walks during the 15 UW-Oshkosh batters he faced.

UW-Oshkosh plays Grinnell College (Iowa) on Sunday (March 22) in Auburndale, Fla.
