Titans Open 2015 Season At Carthage College

The UW-Oshkosh baseball team opens the 2015 season with three games against Carthage College this weekend in Kenosha.

The Titans commence their 60th season with a doubleheader against the Red Men on Saturday (March 14) at noon. The weekend series at Carthage College's Augie Schmidt Field concludes with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday (March 15).

The Kenosha weather forecast calls for sunny skies and highs in the lower 50s for both days. Weather conditions forced the cancelation of two previously scheduled UW-Oshkosh season openers in St. Louis, Mo., and Terre Haute, Ind.

UW-Oshkosh second-year head coach Kevin Tomasiewicz returns 13 lettermen, including five starting position players and four pitchers, from last year's squad that produced a 17-19 record and finished sixth in the WIAC with a 7-15 mark. The Titans' 31-player roster also features 13 freshmen.

UW-Oshkosh returns its top four hitters from 2014, including senior outfielder Luke Gajewski who hit a team-best .366 and sophomore shortstop Tyler Kozlowski who hit .345. Kozlowski added eight doubles and a team-leading 26 runs batted in to collect All-WIAC honorable mention recognition.

The Titans also welcome back a trio of pitchers who made at least 10 appearances on last year's staff that ranked fourth in the WIAC in earned run average. Junior Ben Messenger ranked fourth in the WIAC last season with a 3.28 earned run average and led the team with 47 strikeouts in 49.1 innings pitched.

Carthage College will also be playing its season opener.

Last year, the Red Men compiled a 20-19 record and tied for sixth place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with a 9-12 mark.

Carthage College returns 21 lettermen, but no all-conference performers. The top returning position player is senior shortstop Drew Bailey, who hit .327 with 13 doubles and 24 runs batted in a year ago. Senior Josh Daniels leads the returning pitchers after compiling a 3-2 record and a 3.76 earned run average over 52.2 innings.

UW-Oshkosh and Carthage College have played 22 times, with the Titans owning a 15-7 lead in a series that dates back to 1971. The teams last played on March 19, 2011, with Carthage College winning a 6-1 game in Port Charlotte, Fla.

UW-Oshkosh embarks on its annual spring trip next week. The Titans will play a single game against Webster University (Mo.) on Wednesday (March 18) in Sauget, Ill., before continuing on to Florida for eight contests from March 20-26.
