Titans Ignited By Big Second Inning

A nine-run second inning started UW-Oshkosh on its way to a 13-5 baseball victory over Union College (N.Y.) on Wednesday (March 26) in Auburndale, Fla.

UW-Oshkosh (5-1) scored its second-inning runs on five hits, four hit batsman and one Union College error. The big hits in the frame were a two-run triple by Neil Hebert, a two-run double by Trent Whitcomb and a two-run single by Jake Dostalek.

After a run-scoring triple by Union College's Vincent Esposito in the third inning, UW-Oshkosh scored again with solo runs in the fourth and fifth periods. Trey Demler led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a passed ball, while Bobby Kachel scored in the fifth on the front end of a double steal.

UW-Oshkosh made the score 13-1 with Whitcomb's two-run double in the sixth inning. The Titans' double-digit lead stood up until the Dutchmen's C.J. Worley belted a two-run double and Jeff Grasso a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 13 hits against its first-time opponent, including three by both Hebert and Whitcomb. Ian Czarneski and Robbie Kleman contributed two hits each.

Union College (4-3) had three of its six hits in the eighth inning. The Dutchmen were led in the contest by the two hits from Grasso.

Ben Messenger, a first-year transfer from UW-Stevens Point, won his first game as a pitcher for UW-Oshkosh. He hurled the first seven innings and allowed just one run and three hits. Messenger struck out 10 batters, including two in the second, third and sixth innings.

Shane Hayes relieved Justin Miller for the Titans in the eighth inning and retired all four batters he faced, including three by a strikeout.

Matt Yonta opened the game on the hill for Union College. He earned the loss after giving up nine runs and seven hits over three innings. The Dutchmen had three other players combine to pitch the remaining five innings.

UW-Oshkosh goes after its sixth straight victory when it plays Thomas College (Maine) on Thursday (March 27) in Winter Haven, Fla.
