Titans To Run At WIAC Cross Country Championships

A top-three finish will be the goal for both UW-Oshkosh cross country teams when they compete at the WIAC Championships on Saturday (Nov. 1) at the Ettrick Golf Course in Ettrick.

The 54th edition of the men's meet begins at 12 p.m., while the 37th version of the women's event begins at 1 p.m. UW-La Crosse is the defending champion on both the men's and women's side.

UW-Oshkosh won the 2011 men's title before UW-La Crosse captured championships in both 2012 and 2013. The Titans are the owner of 10 WIAC championships, including back-to-back titles in 1966-67, 1989-90 and 2002-03.

UW-La Crosse scored 53 points to win last year's meet. UW-Eau Claire followed the Eagles with 58 points, UW-Oshkosh with 66 and UW-Stout with 110.

Rounding out last year's team scoring were fifth-place UW-Platteville with 138 points, sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 152, seventh-place UW-Whitewater with 207, eighth-place UW-Superior with 223 and ninth-place UW-River Falls with 233.

The men's meet features five teams ranked among the finest in the NCAA Division III by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. UW-Eau Claire is ranked second in the nation, while UW-La Crosse is fifth, UW-Oshkosh 17th, UW-Stout 19th and UW-Platteville 24th.

Individually, UW-Stout's Patrick Jenkins will be aiming for his second straight first-place finish. He also placed 12th at the 2012 championship.

UW-Oshkosh returns three runners who are making their third appearance at the championship. Jordan Carpenter finished 17th at last year's meet, while Ryne Scopp placed 24th and Mike Foust 41st. In 2013, Foust finished 57th annd Scopp 69th. Carpenter was a 47th-place finisher in 2012.

Also returning to the championship are UW-Oshkosh runners Tyler Miletti and Joe Zack. Miletti finished 57th and Zack 75th a year ago.

In last year's women's meet, UW-La Crosse scored 34 points to end a string of six consecutive titles by UW-Eau Claire. UW-Stevens Point finished second to the Eagles with 78 points, while UW-River Falls placed third and UW-Eau Claire fourth with 86 points each.

Completing last year's team scoring were fifth-place UW-Oshkosh with 119 points, sixth-place UW-Platteville with 129, seventh-place UW-Stout with 200, eighth-place UW-Whitewater with 232 and ninth-place UW-Superior with 286.

UW-Oshkosh is a 15-time WIAC champion. The Titans won all of their titles in a row from 1986 to 2000. UW-Oshkosh hasn't finished second in the WIAC since 2008.

The lone nationally ranked team is UW-La Crosse. The Eagles enter the meet ranked 13th in the country.

UW-La Crosse's Laura Mead is the defending individual champion, while UW-Platteville's Danielle Kunkel finished second a season ago.

Like the UW-Oshkosh men, the UW-Oshkosh women also return three runners who making their third visit to the championship. Sonny Jenkins finished 25th at last year's meet, while Danica Harrison placed 30th and Rhea Fiorita 50th. In 2013, Harrison finished 31st, Jenkins 38th and Fiorita 40th.

Other Titans back from last year's meet are Kylee Verhasselt and Leah Rendflesh. Verhasselt finished eighth to lead all UW-Oshkosh runners, while Rendflesh placed 41st.

The top seven runners in both the men's 8,000-meter race and the women's 6,000-meter race will receive All-WIAC first team recognition. Runners placing eight through 14 earn All-WIAC second team accolades.

All nine WIAC teams will return to action on Nov. 15 at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in Winneconne. UW-Oshkosh will host the event at the Lake Breeze Golf Club. The NCAA Division III Championship is scheduled for Nov. 22 at The Golf Center at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio.
