Fifth Place For Titans At WIAC Championship

Freshman Kylee Verhasselt finished eighth among 100 runners to lead UW-Oshkosh at the WIAC Women's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Nov. 2) at the Kilkarney Hills Golf Course in River Falls.

In the team competition, UW-Oshkosh took fifth place with 119 points. The Titans finished third a year ago with 71 points and fourth in 2011 with 107.

UW-La Crosse scored 34 points to capture its seventh WIAC title. UW-Stevens Point finished second with 78 points, while UW-River Falls placed third with 86 and six-time defending champion UW-Eau Claire fourth with 86.

UW-Platteville took sixth place in the team standings with 129 points, UW-Stout seventh with 200, UW-Whitewater eighth with 232 and UW-Superior ninth with 286.

Verhasselt paced UW-Oshkosh by covering the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:41. The Titans then had Kristen Linzmeier finish 24th in 23:07, Sonny Jenkins 25th in 23:10, Danica Harrison 30th in 23:13 and Leah Rendflesh 41st in 23:35.

Other UW-Oshkosh participants finishing in the top 60 were Rhea Fiorita, Erica Munyan and Mariah McMullen. Fiorita placed 50th in 23:55, Munyan 54th in 24:02 and McMullen 58th in 24:17.

The Titans also had Gabrhael Walman finish 80th in 25:29, Kendal Wormuth 85th in 25:50, Kate Brooks 87th in 26:13 and Morgan Engelhart 89th in 26:22.

UW-La Crosse's Laura Mead claimed the individual title with her time of 21:46. UW-Platteville's Danielle Kunkel finished second in 22:07, UW-La Crosse's Alyssa Luker third in 22:11, UW-River Falls' Tina Harris fourth in 22:15 and UW-Stevens Point's Julia Colling fifth in 22:18.

The top seven runners at the meet received All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eight through 14 earned All-WIAC second team accolades.

UW-La Crosse's Rachel Schroeder collected the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award at the championship.

All nine WIAC teams will return to action at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Nov. 16 in Rock Island, Ill. The NCAA Division III Championship is scheduled for Nov. 23 in Hanover, Ind.
