Cazzola Achieves Three-Peat At WIAC Championship

Christy Cazzola (Sr. • Kaukauna) won her third straight individual title as UW-Oshkosh placed third at the WIAC Cross Country Championship on Saturday (Oct. 27) in Cuba City.

With her time of 21:16, Cazzola became the first runner to capture three crowns in a row. She joins fellow Titan Tiffany Speckman as the only women with three championships.

UW-Eau Claire owned the three finishers behind Cazzola for its winning team score of 32. UW-La Crosse took second with 69 points, as UW-Oshkosh marked 71 for third, UW-Stevens Point 90 for fourth and UW-River Falls 135 for fifth.

The Blugolds finished 2-3-4 individually with Ashlyn Mauer at 21:22, Madison Sawyer at 21:58 and Steph Sjostrom at 22:14. Katie Rydeen (UW-River Falls) clocked a 22:17 for fifth place in the 6,000-meter race.

Seven Titans finished in the top 40, including McKenzie Kelly's (Sr. • New Richmond) ninth-place time of 22:35. It was the third All-WIAC performance for Kelly. Taylor Bauer (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) followed in the 15th position at 23:08, while Allie DeBaker (Jr. • Green Bay) listed 18th in 23:11. Danica Harrison (Fr. • Arpin) was UW-Oshkosh's final scorer with her 31st-place mark of 23:24.

Sonny Jenkins (So. • Manton, Mich.) clocked a time of 23:43 to take 38th, as Rhea Fiorita (Fr. • Burlington) finished in 23:45 for 40th.

The Titans have placed in the top four at the WIAC Championship during each of the last 29 years.

UW-Oshkosh will run at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Nov. 10 at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.
