Titans Conclude Illinois Trip With A Pair Of Losses

Tina Elstner's 34 kills were not enough as the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team lost two matches to close out play at the Barker Chevrolet Classic II on Saturday (Sept. 23) in Bloomington, Ill.

University of Chicago (Ill.) defeated the Titans, 3-1, before Tufts University (Mass.) slipped past UW-Oshkosh, 3-2. University of Chicago won in set scores of 26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14, and Tufts University prevailed over the Titans, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-13.

Elstner paced the Titans in kills during both matches on Saturday, recording 16 kills and nine digs against University of Chicago, and a season-high 18 kills with 10 digs against Tufts University. It was Elstner's fifth double-double of the year and the 16th of her career.

UW-Oshkosh's Rachel Gardner once again led the team in digs in both of Saturday's contests. She registered 26 digs against University of Chicago and 25 against Tufts University.

In the setback to University of Chicago (10-3), UW-Oshkosh owned advantages in kills (51-49), service aces (10-8) and digs (90-73), but the Maroons, the defending University Athletic Association champion, held edges in hitting percentage (.222 to .218) and blocks (10-6.5).

Audrey Scrafford led the Maroons with 16 kills while Madison Pearson added 11 and Sarah Muisenga eight. University of Chicago's Emma Griffith had match highs with 40 assists and five blocks, and Anne Marie Stifter led the Maroons with 17 digs.

Renee Rush matched her career high with nine kills for UW-Oshkosh, which also received eight terminations from Carly Lemke, and seven kills, 21 assists, 13 digs and three service aces from Samantha Jaeke. Katie Hodges chipped in a season-best 20 digs for the Titans.

Each of the past six meetings between University of Chicago and UW-Oshkosh since 2009 have been decided in four sets. The Maroons have won the last three matches in the series, while UW-Oshkosh claimed the previous three matchups.

During the loss to Tufts University, Mackenzie Bright led three Jumbos in double-figure kills with 13. Christina Nwankpa added 12 kills and Heather Holz 11 kills and a match-best nine blocks.

Angela Yu contributed 42 assists and 15 digs for Tufts University while Alexandra Garrett counted a team-leading 22 digs.

Tufts University (7-4), which advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals a year ago, is the defending champion in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

The Jumbos concluded Saturday's contest with slim advantages in kills (48-47) and service aces (8-5) while UW-Oshkosh compiled an 88-82 edge in digs and outhit Tufts University, .164 to .080. Both teams recorded 13.5 blocks.

Lemke had 11 kills for UW-Oshkosh while Shelby Coron tallied eight terminations in 17 attempts to go along with a team-leading and season-best six blocks.

Hodges and Jaeke recorded 18 and 17 digs, respectively, for the Titans, who also received a career-best 31 assists from Jaeke a career-high five blocks from McKenna Scott.

UW-Oshkosh (8-9) returns home to face nationally ranked UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Sept. 27) in Kolf Sports Center.
