Titans Take Over First Place In WIAC Standings
Katelyn Malcheski recorded 16 kills as UW-Oshkosh took over sole possession of first place in the WIAC women's volleyball standings with a 3-0 victory over UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Oct. 7) in Kolf Sports Center.
The Titans (16-5, 3-0 WIAC), ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, won all three sets by identical 25-20 scores. UW-Oshkosh has a one-game lead over UW-Eau Claire (16-6, 2-1 WIAC) and UW-La Crosse (12-7, 2-1) in the conference standings with four league matches remaining.
UW-Oshkosh outhit UW-La Crosse, .267 to .147, on the way to the Titans' third straight win in the series and the 11th victory in the last 13 meetings. UW-Oshkosh recorded 16 kills on .367 hitting in Set 1, 13 kills with a .150 rate in Set 2, and 12 kills with a .323 percentage in Set 3.
Tina Elstner and Nerissa Vogt contributed eight kills apiece for the Titans. UW-Oshkosh's Carly Lemke and Mandy Trautmann led all players with five blocks and 11 digs, respectively, while Lexi Thiel had a match-best 35 assists.
UW-Oshkosh raced out to first-set leads of 15-8 on an Eagles error and 21-12 after back-to-back kills by Thiel and Vogt. The Titans ended the frame with a service ace by Eilish Regan and a kill by Elstner on the final two points.
Trailing 12-6 in the second set, UW-Oshkosh tallied seven of the next eight points on Trautmann's serve to knot the score at 13. The Titans' run was aided by five UW-La Crosse errors. The Eagles reclaimed a 16-15 advantage, but the Titans earned 10 of the last 14 points of the set, including five on kills by Malcheski.
UW-La Crosse recorded four straight points to take a 6-5 lead in the third set before the Titans responded with seven of the next nine points for a 12-8 advantage on a solo block by Lemke. UW-Oshkosh increased its lead to 20-16 on Malcheski's sixth and final kill of the set and completed the three-set sweep on a kill by Vogt.
UW-Oshkosh had advantages in kills (41-34), service aces (4-3) and blocks (9-5) while UW-La Crosse had a 39-38 edge in digs.
Leah Putzier led UW-La Crosse with 11 kills and nine digs. Stephanie Henk added nine kills for the Eagles, who also received seven kills and two service aces from Jill Entinger, and a team-high 24 assists from Jaclyn Barrette.
UW-Oshkosh can strengthen its grasp of the WIAC lead with a victory at UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Oct. 10).
