Titans Record Second Win Of Season Over Eagles

Brooke Brinkman and Katelyn Malcheski combined for 25 kills to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Oct. 15) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (20-3, 3-2 WIAC) won the conference match in set scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-16.

Brinkman led all players with 13 kills on .367 hitting. Malcheski had 12 kills with a .345 attack percentage, while Jessica Fischer added seven kills on 15 swings.

UW-Oshkosh's Lexi Thiel had a match-high 32 assists, 10 digs and three blocks for her first double-double of the season and fourth of her career. Nerissa Vogt registered a season-high seven blocks and Laura Trochinski sent back a career-best four. Mandy Trautmann and Rachel Smith tallied 17 and 10 digs, respectively.

UW-La Crosse recorded more digs (61-58) than UW-Oshkosh, but the Titans held decisive advantages in kills (42-31), hitting percentage (.239 to .053), assists (42-31), service aces (3-1) and blocks (11-4).

The opening set featured a score that was tied 13 times. The last deadlock was at 20, and the Titans broke away from that score with five straight points to win the set. UW-Oshkosh's scoring run included one kill and a solo block by Vogt on set point.

UW-La Crosse (8-14, 1-4 WIAC) had 14 kills, but committed nine attack errors in the first set. UW-Oshkosh recorded 13 kills with just three attack errors to win the hitting battle, .250 to .116.

The Titans raced out to a 10-2 lead in the second set, but the Eagles took advantage of six UW-Oshkosh attack errors to tie the score at 13. Leading 18-17, UW-Oshkosh claimed seven of the set's last nine points behind three kills from Brinkman and a kill and a block by Trochinski on the last two points. The Titans won the kills' column, 15-8, while outhitting the Eagles, .152 to .061.

UW-Oshkosh, which posted a 3-1 non-conference win over UW-La Crosse on Oct. 4, jumped out to a 10-3 lead in Set 3 and held an advantage of six-plus points the rest of the way. The Titans registered 14 kills, including seven by Malcheski, and hit .355 in the final set. The Eagles had nine kills and hit -.026.

Ashley Entinger led UW-La Crosse with eight kills, while Jill Entinger and Stephanie Hank added seven each. The Eagles' Courtney Geisler had a match-high 18 digs.

UW-Oshkosh will play four matches at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational this weekend. The Titans battle the University of Minnesota Morris and the College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) on Friday (Oct. 17) and the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) and The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) on Saturday (Oct. 18).
