Titans Rally To Clip Falcons In Five Sets

Trailing two sets to one, the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team hit .467 over the last two frames and handed UW-River Falls its first WIAC loss with a 3-2 win on Friday (Oct. 10) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans (18-2, 2-1 WIAC), who improved to 8-0 at home, won the match in set scores of 22-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-15 and 15-11. It was UW-Oshkosh's third straight 3-2 win over UW-River Falls (9-11, 3-1 WIAC).

Brooke Brinkman paced the UW-Oshkosh attack with 14 kills. Nerissa Vogt had 10 kills and a match-high six blocks, while Laura Trochinski added nine kills and 16 digs. Mandy Trautmann registered match highs with 32 digs and three service aces. Rachel Smith chipped in with 16 digs. Morgan Cizauskas had 28 assists and Lexi Thiel 23 as they shared time running the offense.

UW-Oshkosh held advantages in kills (56-45), hitting percentage (.184 to .099), assists (54-44), service aces (5-3), digs (98-94) and blocks (11-10). The Titans recorded more kills than the Falcons in each of the last four sets.

UW-River Falls trailed for just one point in Set 1, but had its 21-14 lead cut to 24-22 after consecutive kills by Jessica Fischer, Thiel and Trochinski.

The Titans carried over the momentum from their late surge in the opening set and went on three separate runs of three points or more to build a 14-8 lead in Set 2. The Falcons pulled within four points on two occasions, but UW-Oshkosh scored six of the last seven points and held UW-River Falls to a -.167 hitting percentage to even the match.

Tied at 5 in the third set, UW-River Falls scored six of the next seven points and eventually built a 21-13 lead that the Titans never threatened.

UW-Oshkosh hit .522 in Set 4, but had its 11-5 lead cut to 13-11. The Titans then scored 12 of the last 16 points to again even the match. A pivotal five-point run that featured one kill and two block assists by Vogt on consecutive points provided the Titans with a 21-13 advantage.

The Titans led every point of Set 5 and recorded 10 kills on .421 hitting. UW-River Falls was within one point 10 times, including for the last time at 12-11, but the Titans registered the last three points on a Vogt kill, a Trochinski service ace and a Falcon attack error on match point.

Rebecca Gasper led UW-River Falls with 14 kills, while Raven Klein had a match-high 43 assists and 12 digs.

The Titans remain at home to play a WIAC match against UW-Stout and a non-conference contest against the Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday (Oct. 11) in Kolf Sports Center.
