Titans Split With Eagles, Spartans In Home Debut

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team split a pair of matches in its home opener Wednesday (Sept. 4) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans took the second match, 3-0, over the University of Dubuque (Iowa) by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-14.

In the first set, UW-Oshkosh reeled off eight straight points to take an 18-8 lead over the Spartans before closing it out.

Trailing 19-15, the Titans rallied with 10 unanswered points behind the serving of Jessica Fischer to win the second set.

In the final set, UW-Oshkosh jumped out to a commanding 22-9 lead and held it to complete the sweep.

UW-Oshkosh's Alison Tomczyk led all players by assisting on 17 points. Meggie Schmidt topped the Spartans with eight assists.

Fischer and Shelby Shumaker each had nine digs for the Titans, while Danielle Stoppenbach and Tomczyk each added six digs of their own.

Jordyn Bratel led the Titans with eight kills.

UW-Oshkosh hit .291 as a team for the match including .318 in the second set and .364 in the third. The University of Dubuque hit just .095 for the match.

In the first match of the day, the Titans fell to Edgewood College 3-0. The Eagles took the match by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 26-24.

Edgewood jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first set, but the Titans were able to fight their way back and cut the score to 22-20 before ultimately dropping the set.

The Eagles were able to pull off an 11-4 rally to take the second set.

In the third set, UW-Oshkosh jumped ahead 17-11 before Edgewood scored 15 of the final 22 points.

Stoppenbach led the Titans with 15 digs. The Eagles got 17 digs from Sam Himmelspach, as well as 11 from Jordan Winkler.

Tomczyk tallied 13 assists for UW-Oshkosh while Lindsey Swansby had 25 to lead Edgewood.

Katelyn Malcheski tied for the match-high with 11 kills for the Titans. The Eagles' Jessica Martin equaled Malcheski with 11 kills of her own.

UW-Oshkosh hit .170 as a team, including .306 in the first set.

Edgewood hit .500 for the second set and finished the match at .259.

The Titans will stay at home for a doubleheader featuring matches with Lawrence University and St. Norbert College on Sept. 11. UW-Oshkosh defeated Lawrence, 3-0, on Aug. 31 at the UW-Whitewater Invitational.
