Marchan, Moore Receive USTFCCCA All-Academic Awards

UW-Oshkosh seniors Karina Marchan and Cheyenne Moore were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) 2018 All-Academic Women's Track & Field Team.

The USTFCCCA recognized 627 NCAA Division III student-athletes from 151 schools for their academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2017-18 academic year, including Moore who was honored for the second straight season.

Marchan, who owns a 3.295 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as a kinesiology major, is a six-time WIAC Championship scorer in the long jump.

Marchan finished eighth in the long jump (17-2 1/4) at this year's WIAC Outdoor Championship after placing fourth (18-7) in 2017 and eighth (17-0 1/2) in 2016. The Wild Rose High School graduate took third place in the long jump (18-3) at this year's WIAC Indoor Championship, fifth (17-3 1/4) in 2017 and third (17-5 1/2) in 2016.

Moore, who possesses a 3.725 cumulative GPA as a nursing major, is a three-time NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship qualifier. She finished 10th in the 3,000- (9:47.20) and 13th in the 5,000-meter (17:19.83) runs at this year's championship and 14th in the 5,000-meter race (17:35.83) in 2017.

Moore won the 5,000-meter run (17:17.78) at the 2018 WIAC Indoor Championship after finishing second (17:46.67) in the event in 2017. The Winnebago (Ill.) High School graduate was the 2018 WIAC outdoor champion in the 5,000-meter run (18:11.97).

Moore was named the 2018 NCAA Division III Midwest Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA, becoming just the third Titan to win the award. She also was named the female winner of the 2018 UW-Oshkosh John Taylor Senior Scholar-Athlete Award.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA's Track & Field All-Academic Team, student-athletes must own a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 and have either competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 50 of an individual event or in the national top 35 of a relay event on the official NCAA Descending Order list.

Williams College (Mass.) earned a nation-best 21 All-Academic awards while UW-La Crosse and Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) followed with 20 apiece.

UW-Oshkosh, UW-La Crosse and its six other WIAC colleagues combined for 61 All-Academic selections.

The USTFCCCA selected Amelia Glueck of Illinois Wesleyan University as its Outdoor Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year; Katherine Pitman of Ithaca College (N.Y.) as its Indoor Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year; and Emily Richards of Ohio Northern University as its Indoor and Outdoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The USTFCCCA also chose Williams College as its Indoor Scholar Team of the Year and George Fox University (Ore.) as its Outdoor Scholar Team of the Year.

Williams College, who finished the indoor and outdoor season with a cumulative GPA of 3.57, placed second at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championship. George Fox University compiled a 3.43 GPA and tied for first place at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship with University of Massachusetts Boston. 

The highest cumulative GPA of any NCAA Division III women's track & field program during the 2017-18 academic year belonged to Knox College (Ill.). The Prairie Fire recorded a GPA of 3.80.
