Titans Win Three Events At Phil Esten Challenge

UW-Oshkosh owned the winner in three events and three of the top five performers in the shot put during its second-place finish at the Phil Esten Women's Track & Field Challenge held Friday (April 18) in La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse won the nine-team meet with 211 points, while UW-Oshkosh scored 137 and third-place Winona State University (Minn.) 113. UW-Stevens Point finished fourth with 86 points and Wartburg College (Iowa) fifth with 81.

UW-Oshkosh's Kylee Verhasselt won the 800-meter run and anchored the Titans' first-place 1,600-meter relay team. She posted a time of 2:12.27 in the 800-meter run and joined Stephanie Jahn, Caitlyn McCormick and Elizabeth Pospyhalla to record a time of 3:53.70.

Christy Cazzola was UW-Oshkosh's remaining event winner. She defeated 41 other participants with her time of 4:20.93 in the 1,500-meter run.

In the shot put, UW-Oshkosh's Jecel (Gerner) Klotz finished third with a distance of 46-7 1/4. The Titans' Breanna Strupp placed fourth with a measurement of 45-8 1/2 and Abby Martin fifth at 42-5 1/2. Alissa Rausch, competing unattached, won the event with a throw of 47-4 1/2.

UW-Oshkosh had five second-place efforts, including Strupp's performance of 158-0 in the discus. Melanie Brickner threw the hammer to a mark of 177-4, while Megan Geldernick and Leah Rendflesh ran to times of 15.58 in the 100-meter hurdles and 18:21.84 in the 5,000-meter run, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh's 400-meter relay team of Samantha Blue, Becklyn Hunter, Ashley Holicek and Alesha Malueg finished second with a time of 48.38. Blue also ran to a fourth-place time of 12.52 in 100-meter dash and leaped to a fifth-place distance of 16-8 3/4 in the long jump.

In addition to Klotz, the Titans received third-place efforts from Kasey Ederer and Sonny Jenkins. Ederer leaped 5-3 1/4 in the high jump, while Jenkins ran to a time of 11:55.14 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

UW-Oshkosh's other fifth-place finishes belonged to Geldernick, Hunter, Haley Schatzke and Amanda Shober. Geldernick posted a time of 1:05.86 in the 400-meter hurdles and Hunter a mark of 12.53 in the 100-meter dash. Schatzke leaped to a height of 5-1 1/4 in the high jump, while Shober skipped to a distance of 36-4 3/4 in the triple jump.

The Titans also had Kristen Linzmeier finish sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:47.22 and Taylor Sherry seventh in the heptathlon with 3,910 points.

UW-Oshkosh had a few athletes compete at the St. Norbert College Twilight Invitational on Thursday (April 17). The Titans finished eighth in the team standings with 32 points.

Martin won the shot put with a distance of 42-2 3/4, while placing second in the hammer throw with a mark of 153-4. Melanie Wichman finished third in the discus and sixth in the shot put with measurements of 109-4 and 37-11 1/4, respectively.

Next weekend, UW-Oshkosh athletes will be competing at the Drake Relays on April 24-26 in Des Moines, Iowa, Gina Relays on April 24-26 in Hillsdale, Mich., and the Jeff Miller Drake Alternative Meet on April 26 in Whitewater.
