Titans Finish Second At UW-Platteville Invitational

UW-Oshkosh owned the winner in four events as it finished second at the UW-Platteville Women's Track & Field Invitational held Saturday (April 13) in Platteville.

UW-La Crosse captured the team title with 191.33 points, while UW-Oshkosh placed second with 147, UW-Eau Claire third with 108 and UW-Whitewater fourth with 87. Wartburg College (Iowa) finished fifth in the 11-team meet with 69 points.

UW-Oshkosh scored 21 points in both the 800-meter run and hammer throw events.

Christy Cazzola (Sr. • Kaukauna) won the 800-meter run with time of 2:10.96, while McKenzie Kelly (Sr. • New Richmond) finished third in 2:15.61 and Kylee Verhasselt (So. • Freedom) fourth in 2:16.51.

In the hammer throw, Samantha Loew (Sr. • Burnett) took first place with a distance of 168-8. Abby Martin (Jr. • Chilton) finished second with a mark of 149-7 and Melanie Brickner (So. • Marathon) sixth with a measurement of 146-0. Brickner also ranked fourth in the shot put with a toss of 40-11 3/4 and seventh in the discus with a cast of 114-6.

Other individual winners for the Titans were Taylor Bauer (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) and Heather Clankie (Fr. • Brodhead). Bauer posted a time of 4:56.47 in the 1,500-meter run, while Clankie threw to a distance of 135-1 in the discus.

Contributing second-place finishes were UW-Oshkosh's Kasey Ederer (Fr. • Kaukauna) and Amanda Shober (So. • Sussex). Ederer leaped to a height of 5-5 in the high jump, while Shober skipped to a measurement of 37-10 in the triple jump.

The Titans' Samantha Blue (So. • Kimberly) finished third in two events. She ran to a time of 25.84 in the 200-meter dash while marking a distance of 17-4 1/4 in the long jump. Other third-place finishes went to Martin in the shot put with a distance of 41-7 ¼ and Tessa Thurs (Fr. • Edgar) in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.18.

UW-Oshkosh took the fourth and fifth places in the 100-meter hurdles as Megan Geldernick (So. • Wauconda, Ill.) and Taylor Sherry (Fr. • Viola) posted times of 15.56 and 15.69, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh also had Stephanie Jahn (Jr. • Deerfield) finish sixth in the 400-meter dash (59.74), Alexandria Mahoney (So. • River Valley) sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:22.24), Sonny Jenkins (So. • Manton, Mich.) seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:08.96), Alesha Malueg (So. • Kimberly) seventh in the 100-meter dash (12.81), Becklyn Hunter (So. • Winnebago, Ill.) eighth in the 200-meter dash (26.27) and Leah Rendflesh (Fr. • South Milwaukee) eighth in the 5,000-meter run (18:25.16).

In the relays, UW-Oshkosh placed second at 1,600 meters and fourth at 400. Members of the 1,600-meter squad that ran to a time of 3:54.28 were Cazzola, Jahn, Kelly and Verhasselt. The 400-meter group of Blue, Malueg, Shober and Cassandra Hemmen (So. • Appleton) finished with a time of 50.60.

UW-Oshkosh sends athletes to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., Brian Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., and Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse next weekend (April 18-20).
