Cazzola Breaks Two National Records In Iowa

Christy Cazzola (Sr. • Kaukauna) set NCAA Division III all-time records in the 800-meter and mile runs on Saturday (Feb. 9) in Ames, Iowa.

At the Iowa State Classic, Cazzola won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:05.76. That beat her previous school record by more than four seconds.

Cazzola clocked a 4:43.13 in the mile, breaking Missy Buttry's (Wartburg) national standard from 2005. Team USA's Heather Kampf won the event in 4:37.13.

UW-Oshkosh's other notable finishes came in the weight throw. Samantha Loew (Sr. • Burnett) earned sixth place with a distance of 56-10 and Breanna Strupp (Sr. • Slinger) took eighth with a 55-0.

The Titans also sent athletes to the UW-Stevens Point Quadrangular and placed second with 173.5 points. UW-La Crosse won the meet with 212.5, while UW-Stevens Point listed third at 118 and UW-Whitewater fourth at 80.

Melanie Brickner (So. • Marathon) led the way with a victory in the weight throw (56-6) and a second-place showing in the shot put (42-5.25). Abby Martin (Jr. • Chilton) claimed the shot put win with her 44-0.5.

In the 3,000-meter run, McKenzie Kelly (Sr. • New Richmond) posted a 10:22.15 for first place. UW-Oshkosh's other triumphs were a triple jump of 36-6.75 from Amanda Shober (So. • Sussex) and a 1,600-meter relay time of 4:00.46.

A trio of runner-up finishes came on the track. Kylee Verhasselt (So. • Freedom) took second with her 5:16.64 mile, while Tessa Thurs (Fr. • Edgar) ran the 400-meter race in 59.63 and Allie DeBaker (Jr. • Green Bay) posted a 10:39.45 in the 3,000-meter run. During the high jump, Kasey Ederer (Fr. • Kaukauna) cleared 5-4.25 to grab second place.

The Titans are back in Stevens Point for the Eastbay Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 16).
