Titans Finish Florida Trip With Setbacks To Bruins, Oles

The UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team concluded its four-match trip to Florida with losses of 7-2 to George Fox University (Ore.) and 9-0 to St. Olaf College (Minn.) on Tuesday (March 26) in Orlando.

Michelle Spicer was involved in both UW-Oshkosh victories against George Fox University (5-11). She defeated Alyssa Byde, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and teamed with Alyssa Leffler to oust Byde and Taylor Morris, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.

Sophia Lawrence won contests at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Bruins. Lawrence posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Leffler and paired with Laney Search to tally an 8-2 triumph over Samantha Koppa and Hannah Peters.

George Fox University also had Search in the second flight, Danielle Brown in the third, Morris in the fourth and Emily Brink in the sixth win singles matches.

Search defeated Kelley Hodyl, 6-2, 6-3, while Brown outscored Peters, 6-2, 6-2. Morris marked a 6-2, 6-2 win over Koppa and Brink a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Ireland Slattery.

George Fox University took the No. 3 doubles contest as Lily Elmer and Megan Wilke defeated Hodyl and Ashlee Polena, 8-3.

It was all St. Olaf College (3-4) in the nightcap as the Oles won all six singles matches in straight sets and won 24 of the 34 games in doubles play.

The Oles' Sabrina Barboza won the No. 1 singles contest with a 6-1, 6-1 result over Leffler. Barboza also paired with Greta Prokosch to register an 8-0 victory over Koppa and Peters at No. 1 doubles.

Hodyl gave the Titans (5-7) their best individual outcome with her 6-3, 6-4 setback to Kellis Brandt at No. 2 singles. Polena won four games during her 6-4, 6-0 loss to Teresa Fawcett at No. 6 singles.

Other individual winners for St. Olaf College were Ellie Bergstrand in the third flight, Emily Otteson in the fourth and Prokosch in the fifth.

Bergstrand defeated Peters, 6-0, 6-1, while Otteson ousted Koppa, 6-1, 6-2. Prokosch was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Spicer.

UW-Oshkosh lost a pair of 8-5 results in doubles play as Leffler and Spicer in the second flight and Hodyl and Polena in the third lost verdicts to Bergstrand and Otteson and Brandt and Fawcett, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh will play an exhibition match against St. Olaf College on Thursday (March 28) before returning to Wisconsin. The Titans' next countable contests will be against Carthage College and Illinois Institute of Technology on April 14 in Kenosha.
