Blugolds Halt Titans' Road Winning Streak

UW-Oshkosh suffered its first women's tennis loss in four road matches when UW-Eau Claire defeated the Titans, 9-0, on Saturday (Oct. 13) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh, which conquered St. Norbert College, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout in its previous three road outings, lost all six of its singles contests to UW-Eau Claire in straight sets and managed just three wins in 27 games against the Blugolds in doubles play.

Monica Micoliczyk gave UW-Oshkosh (5-3, 3-3 WIAC) its best individual result with her 6-4, 6-4 setback to Hanna Zevenbergen in the fourth flight. The Titans' Hannah Peters also lost a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Emily Cooper in the second flight.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh's duo of Peters and Jenna Peterson lost an 8-2 decision to Zevenbergen and Molly Stewart in the second flight.

UW-Eau Claire (6-1, 5-1 WIAC) had little trouble in its remaining five victories, as Natalie Wijesinghe led the way with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Alyssa Leffler at No. 1 singles. Wijesinghe also teamed with Cooper to post an 8-1 victory over Leffler and Michelle Spicer at No. 1 doubles.

Alexa Brooks and Lindsey Henderson concluded doubles play for the Blugolds with their 8-0 win over Taylor Johnson and Ashlee Polena in the third flight.

Other individual winners for UW-Eau Claire were Stewart in the third flight, Emma Barnd in the fifth and Rachel Slonac in the sixth. Stewart defeated Spicer, 6-2, 6-1, while Barnd ousted Polena, 6-1, 6-1. Slonac was a 6-2, 6-1 victor over Ireland Slattery.

UW-Oshkosh will compete at the WIAC Championship next weekend at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. Action begins at noon on Saturday (Oct. 20) and 8 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 21).
