Eagles Hand Titans First Loss Of Season

A battle of unbeatens went in favor of UW-La Crosse as the visiting Eagles defeated the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team, 9-0, on Friday (Sept. 14) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex. 

UW-Oshkosh (2-1/0-1 WIAC), which conquered Marian University and St. Norbert College in its previous two contests, had a difficult time against UW-La Crosse (5-0/2-0 WIAC) as it won only 11 of 35 games in doubles play and just 17 of 89 games in singles action.

UW-Oshkosh received its best doubles performances from Samantha Koppa and Ireland Slattery in the third flight and Alyssa Leffler and Michelle Spicer in the second.

Koppa and Slattery lost an 8-5 decision to Maura Andersen and Kaitlyn Kalinka while Leffler and Spicer dropped an 8-4 result to Alyssa Boyer and Kimberly Steinert.

UW-La Crosse took the No. 1 doubles contest as Hayley Clope and Sadie Spahn beat Kelley Hodyl and Hannah Peters, 8-2.

UW-Oshkosh's best individual effort was at No. 3 singles. The Eagles won the flight as Spahn defeated Koppa, 6-3, 6-1.

UW-La Crosse won the No. 1 singles battle as Steinert ousted Leffler, 6-1, 6-2.

The Eagles concluded their list of individual winners with the victories by Clope in the second flight, Andersen in the fourth, Boyer in the fifth and Shira Busch in the sixth. 

Clope defeated Peters, 6-0, 6-3, while Andersen ousted Hodyl, 6-1, 6-1. Boyer was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Spicer and Busch a 6-0, 6-2 victor over Monica Micoliczyk.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it sends a group of players to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Midwest Regional next Friday through Sunday (Sept. 21-23) in St. Peter, Minn.
