Titans Place Seventh At Warhawk Invitational

Michelle Spicer and the duo of Evie Chitko and Ashlee Polena earned wins as the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team opened its 2018 season with a seventh-place finish at Saturday's (Sept. 1) UW-Whitewater Warhawk Invitational.

Spicer compiled a 1-1 record as a competitor in the No. 2 singles category. She suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Augustana College's (Ill.) Zeana Badawi before outlasting Lily Hamilton of Grinnell College (Iowa), 6-3, 3-6 (10-8).

Chitko and Polena performed at No. 3 doubles and split their two decisions. The tandem lost an 8-3 result to eventual champion Madalyn Bigelow and Elsie Ha of UW-Whitewater before ousting Alyssa Cholewinski and Kayleigh Ruffolo of Illinois Wesleyan University, 8-3. 

UW-Whitewater scored 40 points to win the eight-team tournament. The Warhawks were followed by second-place UW-Eau Claire with 37 points and third-place UW-La Crosse with 31.

Augustana College and Carthage College shared fourth place with 29 points while Grinnell College finished sixth with 16 and UW-Oshkosh seventh with six. Illinois Wesleyan University placed eighth after failing to score.

Going winless in their two individual matches were Titans Kelley Hodyl and Monica Micoliczyk. Hodyl competed in the first flight and Micoliczyk in the third.

Other doubles entries for UW-Oshkosh were Alyssa Leffler and Ashlee Polena in the first flight and Samantha Koppa and Ireland Slattery in the second. Each tandem lost both of their contests.

Annie Timm of Augustana College was the No. 1 singles winner. The UW-Eau Claire partners of Hayley Clope and Sadie Spahn captured the No. 1 doubles crown.

UW-Oshkosh hosts Marian University on Thursday (Sept. 6) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.
