Titans Swept by Vikings, Norse In Illinois

UW-Oshkosh earned three wins in singles action and one in doubles play during its women's tennis defeats to Augustana College (Ill.) and Luther College (Iowa) on Sunday (April 22) in Rock Island, Ill.

The Titans (8-7) lost decisions of 8-1 to Augustana College (17-8) and 6-3 to Luther College (10-8).

Against Augustana College, UW-Oshkosh's lone victory came at No. 1 doubles as Hannah Peters and Bailey Sagen edged Maleeha Chowdhury and Madeline Lombardi by an 8-6 score.

The Vikings won the remaining doubles contests by 8-1 results as Zeana Badawi and Annie Timm defeated Samantha Koppa and Alyssa Leffler in the second flight while Leraaen Abbott and Faith Johnson ousted Lesley Kutnink and Ashlee Polena in the third.

All but one of the six singles matches were completed in straight-set victories by Augustana College. The lone exception came in the second flight where Badawi defeated Leffler, 6-0, 2-6 (10).

Timm won 6-1, 6-0 over Sagen at No. 1 singles while Johnson defeated Peters, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3.

Other individual winners for the Vikings were Chowdhury in the fourth flight, Morgan Bullen in the fifth and Abbott in the sixth.

Chowdhury defeated Koppa, 6-2, 6-3, while Bullen ousted Kutnink, 6-1, 6-1. Abbott was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Monica Micoliczyk.

UW-Oshkosh captured wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles during its loss to Luther College.

Sagen won the highest individual flight with her 6-3, 4-6 (9) win over Jackie Cychosz. Leffler took the second flight with her 6-0, 6-2 victory over Anna Pearson and Koppa the fourth with her 6-1, 2-6 (6) triumph over Devon Bourget in the fourth.

Luther College took the third flight as Britta Pressler defeated Peters, 2-6, 6-3 (4).

The Norse also won the fifth and sixth individual flights as Stephanie Almquist and Kelsey Kruse emerged as winners. Almquist defeated Kutnink, 1-6, 6-4 (10) in the fifth flight while Kruse bested Micoliczyk, 6-1, 6-2, in the sixth.

Luther College won all three doubles contests, including Pressler and Ellie Hemker's 8-0 victory over Kutnink and Polena in the third flight.

Cychosz and Pearson secured the No. 1 doubles match with their 8-4 win over Peters and Sagen. At No. 2 doubles, Bourget and Kruse defeated Koppa and Leffler, 8-5.

UW-Oshkosh plays regular-season champion UW-Whitewater on Saturday (April 28) in the semifinal round of the WIAC Team Tournament in Whitewater.
