Titans' Return From Long Layoff Is Successful

The UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team returned to action after nearly a five-month layoff and defeated Illinois Institute of Technology, 6-3, on Saturday (March 3) at Valley Athletics in Neenah.

UW-Oshkosh, which hasn't competed since its participation at the WIAC Championship on Oct. 22, defeated Saturday's first-time opponent by winning four of the six singles contests and two of the three doubles matches.

UW-Oshkosh (8-3) received its highest-ranked individual victory from Samantha Koppa in the third flight. Koppa defeated the Scarlet Hawks' Allyson Trang by a 6-0, 6-3 result while also teaming with Kelley Hodyl to notch an 8-4 win over Sophia Nelson and Jennifer Young at No. 2 doubles.

Hodyl also took the No. 4 singles contest with her 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Nelson.

The Titans captured their remaining individual victories in the fifth and sixth flights. Monica Micoliczyk defeated Paulina Kulyavstev, 6-2, 7-6 (2), at No. 5 singles while Ashlee Polena ousted Shailee Shah, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6.

UW-Oshkosh won the No. 3 doubles match as Micoliczyk and Polena outscored Kulyavstev and Shah, 8-6.

Illinois Institute of Technology (7-6) secured its individual victories in the first and second flights. Weronika Halicka earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bailey Sagen at No. 1 singles while Morgan Colbert posted a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Hannah Peters at No. 2.

The Scarlet Hawks grabbed the win at No. 1 doubles as Colbert and Halicka defeated Peters and Sagen, 8-2.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it hosts Coe (Iowa) and Carthage colleges at Valley Athletics on April 8.
