Warhawks End Titans' Run Of Victories

One winning streak continued and another came to an end as 10-time defending WIAC champion UW-Whitewater defeated UW-Oshkosh, 9-0, in a women's tennis match held Tuesday (Oct. 3) in Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater (6-0, 4-0 WIAC) recorded wins in 72 of the 91 games in the singles competition and 24 of the 27 games in the doubles activity to extend its string of consecutive WIAC victories to 85.

UW-Oshkosh (5-2, 1-2 WIAC) had won its previous five contests for its longest winning streak since starting the 2012-13 season with a 7-0 record.

UW-Whitewater set the tempo against the Titans by winning all three doubles flights, including the third flight where Brittany Goebel and Julie Martin ousted Lesley Kutnink and Ashlee Polena, 8-0.

The Warhawks also received an 8-2 win from Bridgid McGuire and Jillian Wallace at No. 1 and an 8-1 victory from Paige Nierman and Alexandra Talyansky at No. 2 doubles. McGuire and Wallace won their decision over Hannah Peters and Bailey Sagen while Nierman and Talyansky took their result over Samantha Koppa and Alyssa Leffler.

UW-Oshkosh got its best individual effort from Sagen at No. 1 singles. Sagen won seven games in her 6-3, 6-4 loss to Talyansky.

UW-Whitewater lost three or less games in the remaining five individual contests, including the third flight where Wallace defeated Peters, 6-1, 6-1.

The Warhawks took contests at No. 2 and No. 5 singles by 6-2, 6-0 scores. McGuire was the winner over Leffler in the second flight while Nierman was the victor over Kutnink in the fifth.

UW-Whitewater wrapped up its list of individual winners with the 6-1, 6-2 victories by Martin in the fourth flight and Sabrina Palavra in the sixth. Martin beat Koppa while Palavra conquered Monica Micoliczyk.

UW-Oshkosh will host UW-Stevens Point on Thursday (Oct. 5) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.
