Titans Place Seventh At UW-Whitewater Invitational

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Kelley Hodyl and Samantha Koppa earned a sixth-place finish to lead UW-Oshkosh at the UW-Whitewater Women's Tennis Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 2) in Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater owned the winner in the top singles flight and each division of the doubles competition to capture its 11th straight team title. The event consisted of eight teams competing in three flights of both singles and doubles activity.

UW-Whitewater scored 50 points to easily outdistance the 35 of runner-up Grinnell College (Iowa). UW-La Crosse finished third with 32 points while UW-Eau Claire placed fourth with 30, Augustana College (Ill.) fifth with 27, Carthage College sixth with 23, UW-Oshkosh seventh with 11 and Illinois Wesleyan University eighth with 8. The Titans finished eighth at last year's invitational with 12 points.

Hodyl and Koppa concluded the tournament with a 1-2 record. The duo lost a 6-0, 6-4 result to Carthage College's Angelica Emmanouil and Max Mella before posting a 6-1, 6-3 win over Illinois Wesleyan University's Alyssa Cholewinski and Sam Robinson. Hodyl and Koppa lost their fifth-place contest by a 6-1, 6-0 tally to UW-La Crosse's Bridget Bellissimo and Sadie Spahn.

In singles play, Alyssa Leffler, Lesley Kutnink and Angie Carini all placed eighth for the Titans with 0-3 records. Kutnink had the most competitive seventh-place match with her 6-4, 6-0 setback to Illinois Wesleyan University's Gail Mar in the second flight.

In doubles action, UW-Oshkosh's Monica Micoliczyk and Ashlee Polena placed seventh in the second flight with a 1-2 record while Hannah Nauth and Frances Witt finished eighth in the third with a 0-3 mark. Micoliczyk and Polena earned seventh place by outlasting Rebecca Rochacz and Kayleigh Ruffolo of Illinois Wesleyan University by a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-8) result.

UW-Oshkosh will host Ripon College on Tuesday (Sept. 5) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex. The Titans have won their last 12 meetings with the Red Hawks.
