Warhawks Continue WIAC Streak With Win Over Titans

Brianna Theobald won at No. 3 singles for the lone UW-Oshkosh victory as the Titans dropped an 8-1 women's tennis decision to seven-time defending WIAC champion UW-Whitewater on Tuesday (Sept. 30) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.

Theobald gave UW-Oshkosh (3-7, 1-2 WIAC) the team point with her 1-6, 6-3 (10-6) victory over Amanda Dick.

UW-Whitewater (7-0, 4-0 WIAC) opened the match with three straight wins in doubles play. The Titans had their best performance in the first flight, where Bailey Sagen and Erica Van Riper dropped an 8-5 result to Alica Beck and Bridgid McGuire.

At No. 2 doubles, the UW-Whitewater tandem of Megan Humphreys and Jillian Wallace defeated Theobald and Llora Waldman, 8-2. The Warhawks completed the sweep of doubles contests with the 8-3 win by Ashley Miller and Amy Upthagrove over Maggie Bolton and Hannah Bostwick in the third flight.

UW-Whitewater, which has won its last 60 WIAC matches, took five of the six singles contests, including Humphreys' 6-1, 6-1 victory over Van Riper in the first flight.

Winning by 6-0, 6-2 scores were McGuire over Sagen in the second flight and Upthagrove over Waldman in the fourth.

UW-Whitewater also received individual wins from Alexandra Talyansky in the fifth flight and Beck in the sixth. Talyansky defeated Paige Ganser, 6-1, 6-1, while Beck ousted Bostwick, 6-2, 6-1.

UW-Oshkosh takes to the road for WIAC matches at UW-Eau Claire (9 a.m.) and UW-Stout (3 p.m.) on Saturday (Oct. 4).
