Pointers Rally Past Titans

Katelyn Asfeld won the decisive contest as UW-Stevens Point rallied to defeat the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team, 5-4, on Thursday (Oct.10) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.

UW-Stevens Point (9-4/3-3 WIAC) trailed 4-2 before Asfeld capped the Pointers' comeback with a 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Brianna Theobald at No. 2 singles.

The Pointers pulled even with the Titans (5-8/2-4 WIAC) on wins from Taylor Weuve at No. 3 and Molly Hendries at No. 6 singles. Weuve defeated Valerie Langkau, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, while Hendries ousted Andrea Larson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.

UW-Oshkosh got off to the better start, taking a 2-1 lead after doubles play. The Titans got an 8-5 win from Morgan Counts and Erica Van Riper in the first flight and an 8-4 victory from Maggie Bolton and Llora Waldman in the third. Counts and Van Riper beat Weuve and Rachel Brown, while Bolton and Waldman topped Hendries and Kristen Finstad.

UW-Oshkosh picked up its other wins from Van Riper at No. 4 and Waldman at No. 5 singles. Van Riper won by a 6-3, 6-3 score over Hayley Schlueter and Waldman by a 6-3, 7-5 result over Ali Bichler.

UW-Stevens Point obtained its remaining individual win from Brown. She won at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Counts.

The Pointers earned an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles as Asfeld and Schlueter defeated Theobald and Hannah Bostwick.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it competes at the WIAC Championship on Oct. 26-27 in Madison.
