Defending WIAC Champion Warhawks Overwhelm Titans

UW-Oshkosh won only 11 games as it suffered a 9-0 loss to the UW-Whitewater women's tennis team on Wednesday (Sept. 25) in Whitewater.

The six-time defending WIAC champion Warhawks (5-0/3-0 WIAC) remained unbeaten on the season by winning 72 of their 82 games in singles play and 24 of their 26 games in doubles action.

UW-Oshkosh (4-4/1-1 WIAC) received its best individual effort from Valerie Langkau and Llora Waldman. Both players lost by 6-2, 6-1 scores, with Langkau losing to Erika Williams in the third flight and Waldman to Jessica Vitale in the fifth.

The Titans' Morgan Counts lost by a 6-2, 6-0 result to Alexandra Bayliss at No. 1 singles and Erica Van Riper by a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Amy Upthagrove at No. 4.

UW-Whitewater posted a pair of 6-0, 6-0 individual victories as Megan Humphreys defeated Brianna Theobald in the second flight and Hillary Franzen ousted Andrea Larson in the sixth.

The Warhawks recorded another shutout in doubles action as Bayliss and Vitale tallied an 8-0 victory over Counts and Van Riper in the first flight.

Winning by 8-1 scores were the UW-Whitewater tandems of Humphreys and Vitale in the second flight and Franzen and Abby Day in the third. Humphreys and Vitale beat Theobald and Hannah Bostwick while Day and Franzen topped Waldman and Maggie Bolton.

UW-Oshkosh travels to UW-River Falls on Friday (Sept. 27) before battling UW-La Crosse and Winona State University (Minn.) in La Crosse on Saturday (Sept. 28).
