Pioneers Ruin Titans' Home Opener

Morgan Counts and Jessica Stark were individual winners as the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team lost a 6-3 decision to Carroll University on Tuesday (Sept. 3) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.

Carroll University (4-1) led 2-1 after the doubles competition and sealed the victory on wins by Alison Lambrecht and Samantha Hoyord at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Both players won on a tiebreaker as Lambrecht edged Valerie Langkau, 2-6, 6-2 (10-8), while Hoyord slipped past Llora Waldman, 1-6, 6-4 (10-7).

Counts won all 12 games as she posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Megan Rosenburg at No. 2 singles. Working overtime, Stark recorded her first collegiate win with a 6-4, 5-7 (10-8) triumph over Julie Schweiss at No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, UW-Oshkosh (0-1) earned its lone victory on a win by Counts and Erica Van Riper in the first flight. The Titan tandem tallied an 8-4 triumph over Rosenburg and Abigail Pellett.

The Pioneers picked up their remaining individual wins from Pellett in the first flight and Julia Patzin in the third. Pellett, the defending Midwest Conference No. 1 singles champion, defeated Brianna Theobald by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Patzin coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Andrea Larson.

Other double winners for Carroll University were Lambrecht and Patzin in the second flight and Hoyord and Sarah Wick in the third. Lambrecht and Patzin defeated Theobald and Hannah Bostwick, 8-4, while Hoyord and Wick ousted Langkau and Maggie Bolton, 8-5.

UW-Oshkosh begins WIAC action against UW-Stout on Friday (Sept. 6) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.
