Titans Sneak Past Falcons In WIAC Opener

Karlie Laveau (So. • Waukesha) and Erica Van Riper (So. • Waukesha) earned shutout victories in singles play as UW-Oshkosh pulled out a 5-4 win over the UW-River Falls women's tennis team on Friday (Sept. 14) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex. The match was the WIAC opener for both teams.

UW-Oshkosh (5-0/1-0 WIAC) clinched the triumph with Valerie Langkau's (Jr. • Oshkosh) 6-1, 7-5 decision over Jodi VandeRiet at No. 3 singles.

In the sixth singles flight, Laveau breezed by Courtney Swanson, 6-0, 6-0. Van Riper matched that feat with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Makayla Newberry at No. 5 singles.

Morgan Counts (Jr. • Oshkosh) gained the Titans' other individual win with her 6-3, 6-1 victory over Amanda Drangeid at No. 2 singles.

UW-Oshkosh's lone doubles win came in the second flight as Counts and Van Riper posted an 8-3 triumph over Swanson and Brittany Mohn.

UW-River Falls (2-5/0-1 WIAC) got wins from Jenny Paxton and Kelsey Hochberger at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. respectively. Paxton defeated Preslee Nolte (So. • Warren, N.J.), 6-3, 6-3, while Hochberger ousted Megan Etten (Jr. • Howard), 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles play, Drangeid and Paxton teamed up to give the Falcons an 8-4 victory over Etten and Nolte in the top flight. At No. 3 doubles, Newberry and Hannah Klimek marked an 8-5 decision over Langkau and Laveau.

UW-Oshkosh welcomes a visit by Ripon College to the Kolf Sports Center Complex on Tuesday (Sept. 18).
