Blugolds Knock Down Titans

UW-Eau Claire won all six singles contests to pull away and defeat the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team, 8-1, on Saturday (Oct. 8) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.

UW-Oshkosh (6-4/3-2 WIAC) earned its lone team point on a 9-7 win by Morgan Counts (So. • Oshkosh) and Brianna Theobald (So, • Manitowoc) over Lexi DeMario and Mary Frassetto at No. 3 doubles.

UW-Eau Claire (8-2/4-0 WIAC) took the remaining two doubles competitions to build a 2-1 lead in the match. The Blugolds picked up an 8-3 win from Katie Gillman and Taylor Heltne over Emily Bostwick (Sr. • Whitefish Bay) and Lauren Piotrowski (So. • Greendale) in the first flight and an 8-5 triumph from Gretchen Bachmeier and Maddie Johnson over Megan Etten (So. • Howard) and Preslee Nolte (Fr. • Warren, N.J.) in the second.

UW-Eau Claire then coasted to the win by capturing five of its six singles challenges in straight sets, including DeMario's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Valerie Langkau (So. • Oshkosh) in the sixth flight and Johnson's 6-1, 6-3 conquest of Theobald in the fourth.

UW-Oshkosh's best fight came at No. 5 singles, where Piotrowski dropped a 3-6, 6-1 (10-8) decision to Renee Nelson.

The Blugolds concluded their list of singles winners with Taylor Heltne's 7-6, 7-5 result over Bostwick in the first flight, Bachmeier's 6-3, 6-2 verdict over Nolte in the second and Gillman's 6-4, 6-2 ruling over Counts in the third.

UW-Oshkosh concludes its dual meet schedule for the 2011 season against UW-Stevens Point on Thursday (Oct. 13) at the Kolf Sports Center Complex.
