Challoner's Record-Breaking Swims Paces Titans At WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh's Sydney Challoner was the runner-up in two events and a fifth-place finisher in another at the three-day Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Swimming & Diving Championship (Presented by Culver's) that concluded Saturday (Feb. 16) at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer.

Challoner, who was also involved in three school-record performances, finished second in both the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley with times of 2:10.58 and 2:13.71, respectively, and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a swim of 58.81 seconds.

Challoner set one UW-Oshkosh individual record with her time in the final of the 100-yard butterfly and another with her time of 2:09.75 in the preliminary of the 200-yard butterfly. She also joined Jennifer Lutz, Alexandra Schuster and Tessa Shorten for a school-record and fifth-place swim of 8:01.76 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Lutz contributed three top 15-finishes by placing sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.98, 10th in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:15.66 and 15th in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:03.04.

Titans Rebecca Birriel and Alyssa Hassel both recorded ninth-place finishes with their times of 4:52.42 in the 400-yard individual medley and 1:09.72 in the 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.

Birriel added 12th-place times of 2:18.30 in the 200-yard individual medley and 2:35.51 in the 200-yard breaststroke while Hassel supplied an 11th-place listing of 2:34.54 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Schuster and Hannah Cunningham also had strong overall performances for the Titans.

Schuster placed 10th in both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke with times of 54.48 seconds and 1:01.45, respectively, and 13th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.99 seconds.

Cunningham took 11th place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.37 and 15th in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles with times of 25.29 and 55.39 seconds, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh's Lexi Gray provided a pair of top-16 finishes with her 12th-place time of 19:22.05 in the 1,650-yard freestyle and 16th-place time of 5:32.17 in the 500-yard freestyle.

The Titans rounded out their top swimming performances with the 14th-place time of 20:10.65 in the 1,650-yard freestyle by Brianna Beseler, 14th-place time of 2:34.81 in the 200-yard butterfly by Emma Wilcher and 15th-place time of 5:29.84 in the 500-yard freestyle by Shorten.

In the diving, UW-Oshkosh's Johnna Seelman finished 11th off the 3-meter board with 225.05 points and 12th off the 1-meter plank with 249.20.

UW-La Crosse scored 835 points to win its eighth straight WIAC team title and 19th overall. The Eagles were followed in the team listings by second-place UW-Eau Claire with 798 points, third-place UW-Whitewater with 651, fourth-place UW-Stevens Point with 541 and fifth-place UW-Oshkosh with 296.

The Titans scored points in 15 individual events, including 33 in the 100-yard butterfly and 22 in the 200-yard individual medley.
