Titans Edge Pioneers With Win In Last Event

UW-Oshkosh won the meet's 13th and final event to pull out a 118-112 victory over the Carroll University women's swimming & diving team on Saturday (Oct. 27) in Albee Hall.

The Titans trailed the Pioneers, 108-107, after 12 events and needed a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay to celebrate a triumph in their first home meet of the season. UW-Oshkosh was successful in answering the challenge as Hannah Cunningham, Rachel Jaworski, Alexandra Schuster and Tessa Shorten combined to win the relay with a time of 3:49.49.

UW-Oshkosh had six other first-place finishes, including two by Sydney Challoner and one each by Cunningham, Schuster, Shorten and Rebecca Birriel.

Challoner won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.93 and the 100-yard butterfly with a swim of 1:01.81. She also helped Birriel, Schuster and Jennifer Lutz post a second-place time of 4:23.16 in the 400-yard medley relay.

Birriel won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:26.41 while Cunningham placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a performance of 56.82 seconds. Schuster took the top finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.11 seconds and Shorten the highest ranking in the 200-yard freestyle with an effort of 2:07.14.

Cunningham and Shorten also finished second in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 26.53 and 58.66 seconds, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh's Johnna Seelman contributed a pair of second-place finishes in the diving after totaling 160.30 points off the 1-meter board and 163.90 off the 3-meter plank.

The Titans recorded seven third-place finishes, including times of 58.94 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and 2:10.75 in the 200-yard freestyle by Jaworski and times of 6:07.24 in the 500-yard freestyle and 20:55.74 in the 1,650-yard freestyle by Lexi Gray.

Other Titans finishing third were Birriel in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:15.33, Lutz in the 100-yard butterfly with a performance of 1:04.61 and Alyssa Hassel in the 200-yard individual medley with an effort of 2:30.46. Lutz also finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.19.

UW-Oshkosh's Jennifer Anderson and Brianna Beseler both achieved a pair of fourth-place finishes. Anderson marked times of 1:19.85 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:33.13 in the 200-yard individual medley while Beseler registered times of 6:09.27 in the 500- and 21:21.52 in the 1,650-yard freestyle events.

UW-Oshkosh is idle until it hosts UW-Whitewater on Nov. 9 in Albee Hall.
