Titans Close Out Regular Season With Win Over Red Hawks

UW-Oshkosh won eight of the 11 events, including a pair by both McKinzie Halkola and Jennifer Lutz, to defeat the Ripon College women's swimming & diving team, 134-70, on Saturday (Feb. 3) in Ripon.

Halkola took first place in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles with times of 2:05.15 and 5:33.45, respectively, while Lutz won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:02.13 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.67.

Halkola and Lutz also joined Sydney Challoner and Tessa Shorten in posting a winning time of 1:57.48 in the 200-yard medley relay.

Other event winners for the Titans were Challoner in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.45, Rebecca Birriel in the 200-yard individual medley with a performance of 2:23.28 and Alison Panske in the 100-yard freestyle with an effort of 58.03 seconds.

Birriel also finished second in two events and swam on the Titans' runner-up 200-yard medley relay team. Birriel recorded times of 1:15.18 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 12:13.65 in the 1,000-yard freestyle while joining Jennifer Anderson, Cortney Claypool and Emma Wilcher to post a relay time of 2:03.81. 

Also contributing second-place listings for UW-Oshkosh were Anderson in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:31.62, Challoner in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:03.91, Panske in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.92 seconds and Shorten in the 100-yard freestyle at 58.67 seconds.

The Titans' third-place finishes went to Anderson in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.25, Claypool in the 100-yard backstroke with a performance of 1:08.38, Shorten in the 50-yard freestyle with a speed of 27.05 seconds, Wilcher in the 100-yard butterfly with an effort of 1:09.97 and Elizabeth Kelly in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a measure of 12:32.61.

Adding fourth-place results for UW-Oshkosh were Claypool in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:14.57, Kelly in the 500-yard freestyle with a performance of 6:03.97, Wilcher in the 200-yard individual medley with a rate of 2:38.18, Erin Schlotfeldt in the 100-yard freestyle with an effort of 1:03.63 and Janelle Sharpee in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:33.98.

UW-Oshkosh also finished second and third in the 200-yard freestyle relays. The second-place time of 1:50.16 was recorded by Panske, Schlotfeldt, Lexi Gray and Davi Ruckdashel while the third-place mark of 2:00.79 was tallied by Kelly, Sharpee, Brianna Beseler and Josie Ruckdashel.

Gabrielle Kraus and Johnna Seelman, who did not compete against Ripon College in the swimming only meet, represented UW-Oshkosh on Saturday at the University of Illinois at Chicago Diving Invitational in Chicago, Ill.

Off the 1-meter plank, Kraus finished 12th among 21 participants with 215.20 points and Seelman 21st with 139.95. Off the 3-meter board, Kraus placed 15th among 20 contestants with 189.60 points and Seelman 19th with 144.05. 

Ling Kuhn from the University of Illinois won the 1-meter diving with 285.35 points while Cydney Liebenberg from the University of Illinois at Chicago captured first place in the 3-meter diving with 295.45. Both event winners were from NCAA Division I schools.

The Titans are off until they compete at the WIAC Championship on Feb. 15-17 at the Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer. UW-Oshkosh finished fifth at last year's championship with 330.5 points. The score was the highest by the Titans at the league championship since 2005.
