Titans Prevail Over Vikings

Seven different Titans won events as the UW-Oshkosh women's swimming & diving team defeated Lawrence University, 121.5-104.5, on Saturday (Jan. 6) in Appleton.

Winning swimming races for UW-Oshkosh were Rebecca Birriel in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:22.49, Sydney Challoner in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:13.50, McKinzie Halkola in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:38.62, Jennifer Lutz in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:05.84 and Tessa Shorten in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:03.65.

Taking first place for the Titans in the diving category were Gabrielle Kraus and Johnna Seelman. Kraus scored 244.28 points off the 1-meter board while Seelman compiled 173.65 points off the 3-meter plank.

Birriel, Lutz, Seelman and Shorten backed up their first-place listings with a second-place finish as well. Birriel swam to a time of 1:13.62 in the 100-yard breaststroke while Lutz went 1:02.04 in the 100-yard butterfly and Shorten 57.18 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Seelman finished second in the 1-meter diving with 169.05 points. 

UW-Oshkosh's five third-place finishes were highlighted by the two from Cortney Claypool. Claypool earned her rankings with times of 1:11.07 in the 100-yard backstroke and 12:08.01 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Other third-place mentions went to the Titans' Challoner in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.80, Halkola in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:07.56 and Alison Panske in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.69 seconds.

Finishing fourth for UW-Oshkosh were Panske in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.81 seconds, Elizabeth Kelly in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 12:17.72, Eryn Schlotfeldt in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:11.47 and Emma Wilcher in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:37.44.

In the relays, UW-Oshkosh placed first in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:57.29 and second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:50.17.

Members of the Titans' winning 200-yard medley relay squad were Challoner, Halkola, Lutz and Shorten. The 200-yard freestyle relay group consisted of Claypool, Panske, Schlotfeldt and Davi Ruckdashel.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it hosts Beloit College on Jan. 19 and six-time defending WIAC champion UW-La Crosse on Jan. 20 in Albee Hall.
