Sommers Sets New Standard At Falcon Invitational
Samantha Sommers (Jr. • Suamico) broke a school record
among her pair of top-three finishes at the Falcon Swimming
Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 3-4) in Minneapolis,
Minn. No team scores were kept at the meet.
Besting 39 other swimmers, Sommers placed second in the 100-yard
butterfly with a time of 59.76. Luther College’s (Iowa) Erin
Mykleby took the title with a slightly better mark of 59.49.
Sommers established a UW-Oshkosh best by finishing the 200-yard
butterfly in a third-place time of 2:15.92. UW-Eau Claire’s
Nicole Dorvinen won the event at 2:06.80, while Ellen Dean (College
of St. Benedict) placed second at 2:13.79.
The Titans received two third-place showings from Melissa Harvey
(Jr. • Kingsford, Mich.). She excelled in the backstroke
events, marking a 1:01.03 figure in the 100-yard competition and a
2:16.37 at 200 yards. Harvey added a sixth-place finish in the
200-yard individual medley with a score of 2:21.26.
UW-Oshkosh had three relay squads record a seventh-place finish.
The 200-yard medley relay team clocked a 1:58.82. The Titans also
posted times of 3:50.78 in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 4:20.57
in the 400-yard medley relay, along with an eighth-place mark of
1:46.41 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Eight teams competed in the invitational’s red division,
including UW-Oshkosh, UW-Eau Claire and host UW-River Falls.
UW-Oshkosh returns to the pool to host Lawrence University on Friday (Dec. 10) in Albee Hall.
