Titans Rally For Thrilling Overtime Win Over Blugolds

Madelyn Runyan scored in the final seconds of regulation and Addie Schmitz during the third minute of the second overtime period to give the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team a stunning 2-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Oct. 19) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Eau Claire (10-5, 2-2 WIAC) appeared to be in line for its third straight victory over UW-Oshkosh, but Runyan won a scramble for the ball off a free kick and tapped a 1-yard match-tying shot into the net with only two seconds left in regulation. Runyan, UW-Oshkosh's goalkeeper, vacated the Titan net for the free kick deep in UW-Eau Claire territory and the result was her first collegiate goal.

After a scoreless first overtime period, UW-Oshkosh (6-7-1, 2-2 WIAC) completed the rousing comeback victory on a goal by Schmitz at the 2:25 mark (102:25) of the second overtime session. Schmitz's fourth goal of the season was a 10-yard kick that followed a pass from Mackenzie Bennett.

The teams were involved in a scoreless battle until UW-Eau Claire's Hannah Schaetzel scored off a pass from Emily Sullivan during the contest's 55th minute (54:52) of action. Schaetzel's kick from 10-yards out marked her second goal of the season.

UW-Oshkosh attempted 15 shots in the match, including eight that were saved by UW-Eau Claire goalkeeper Anna Sveiven. The Titans were led by the three shots from Schmitz and the two each from Mallory Knight, Maddie Morris, Amber Richter and Tory Schumann.

UW-Eau Claire launched 17 shots and earned seven of the game's nine corner kick opportunities. The Blugolds had six shots saved by Runyan and another by a Titan defensive player.

UW-Eau Claire's overall shot count featured three from both Schaetzel and Sullivan and two each from Tessa Grywalsky, Krista Koenig and Emma Stange.

UW-Oshkosh takes a three-match winning streak into Wednesday's (Oct. 23) contest at UW-Stevens Point.
