Pioneers Defeat Titans In Regular-Season Finale

Freshman Caelyn Steffens scored her league-leading 25th and 26th goals of the season as the UW-Platteville women's soccer team earned a WIAC postseason berth with its 2-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Oct. 27) in Platteville.

UW-Oshkosh (7-10-1, 3-4 WIAC), which clinched its spot in the upcoming WIAC Championship earlier in the week, finished the regular season tied for fourth place in the league standings with UW-Platteville (9-9) and UW-Whitewater (9-9-1). The Titans will be the six-team tournament's sixth seed and begin play at third-seeded UW-Eau Claire (8-7-1, 4-2-1) on Tuesday (Oct. 30).

Tuesday's other first-round match has fourth-seeded UW-Platteville hosting fifth-seeded UW-Whitewater.

Top-seeded UW-La Crosse (15-2-2, 6-0-1 WIAC) and second-seeded UW-Stevens Point (12-2-3, 5-0-2) both earned byes and will host semifinal round contests on Thursday (Nov. 1). UW-La Crosse claimed the tournament's top seed by winning its second straight WIAC regular season title.

The final of the WIAC Championship will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed next Saturday (Nov. 3).

Saturday's match between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville was scoreless until Steffens broke free and sailed a kick into the net during the 42nd minute (41:15) of play.

The Pioneers held their one-goal lead until Steffens scored her second goal on a kick in the game's 79th minute (78:54).

UW-Oshkosh lost the match despite owning advantages over UW-Platteville in shots (10-4), shots on goal (7-3) and corner kicks (4-2).

The Titans had seven of their shots saved by UW-Platteville goalkeeper Kathryn Flaherty, including five during the final 21 minutes of activity.

UW-Oshkosh was led by Mallory Knight's three shots and Emily Burg's two. Knight had shots saved by UW-Platteville's Flaherty during the game's 48th, 73rd and 87th minute and Burg in the 86th.

UW-Platteville's shot total was led by the three from Steffens.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Erin Toomey saved one of the three shots she faced, a kick by Steffens in the contest's 77th minute. 

UW-Oshkosh is appearing in the WIAC Championship for the 26th straight year. The Titans lost to UW-Whitewater in the semifinal round last year and won the tournament in 2011 and 2014.
