Lady Reds Rally Back To Defeat Titans

Joanne Stanfa scored the tying and winning goal during the final six minutes of play as Carthage College rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team, 3-2, on Wednesday (Sept. 19) in Kenosha.

Stanfa generated both of her goals off corner kicks launched by teammate Jacey Kent. She evened the score at 2 with a kick during the game's 85th minute (84:18) and then put the Lady Reds in front 3-2 with a header in the 88th (87:35). The goals were Stanfa's second and third of the season.

UW-Oshkosh (3-4-1) was held to just three shots by a stingy Carthage College defense, but two of them found the back of the net as the Titans took a 2-0 lead after 36 minutes of action.

UW-Oshkosh went in front 1-0 when Kylee Brown scored her first collegiate goal off passes from Hope Schaefer-Kemps and Addie Schmitz seven minutes (6:18) into play.

The Titans then doubled their lead when Mary Schmidt recorded her first collegiate score off a pass from Tory Schumann at the 35:03 mark of the match.

The only other shot manufactured by the Titans was a header by Schumann during the contest's 35th minute.

Carthage College (4-2-1) finished the match with 14 shots (seven in each half), including a successful Kent penalty kick that sliced the Lady Reds' deficit to 2-1 at the 52:20 mark of the game. The goal was Kent's first of the year.

Anna McHatton owned four of Carthage College's overall shots while Stanfa possessed three and Libby Snyder two.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Madelyn Runyan went the distance and saved five of the eight shots she faced. She blocked two Carthage College shots in the first half and three in the second.

Carthage College split its goalkeeping duties evenly as Emily Furmanek played the first half and Sara Lieffrig the second. Neither player recorded a save, but Furmanek allowed the two shots she faced.

UW-Oshkosh was Carthage College's third WIAC opponent this season. The Lady Reds previously tied UW-Stevens Point, 2-2, and lost a 2-1 decision to UW-La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh returns home to host Concordia University Wisconsin on Sunday (Sept. 23) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
