One Score Enough For Titans To Defeat Saints

Emily Burg's first collegiate goal was the difference as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team edged The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.), 1-0, on Saturday (Sept. 1) in Duluth, Minn.

Burg recorded her meaningful score on a kick that sailed into the upper portion of the net during the 15th minute (14:18) of play. The goal came on UW-Oshkosh's fourth shot of the match, all within a four-minute period.

UW-Oshkosh (1-0-1) had two opportunities to score prior to Burg's goal, but kicks by Addie Schmitz in the 12th minute and Ashley Baalke in the 13th were blocked by Saint goalkeeper Roni Rudolph.

The first shot on goal by The College of St. Scholastica (0-1) came in the 30th minute off the foot of Mara Roberts. UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Erin Toomey made the save on Roberts' kick and also that of Lorena Lane's boot in the 38th minute.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the first half with 10 shots, including four other attempts that were stopped by Rudolph. The shots of Roberts and Lane were the only ones launched by the Saints in the opening period.

Second-half play went scoreless despite seven more shots by UW-Oshkosh and four by The College of St. Scholastica.

Rudolph tallied additional three saves in the second half while Toomey marked two, including the last one off a kick by Roberts in the 62nd minute.

UW-Oshkosh's defense tightened up down the stretch as it held The College of St. Scholastica without a shot during the final 18 minutes of action.

UW-Oshkosh was led in its shot count by the three from both Baalke and Mallory Knight

The Saints, who competed in last year's NCAA Division III Championship, were paced by the two shots fired by both Roberts and Morgan Friday.

UW-Oshkosh placed four players on the 10-member Labor Day Challenge All-Tournament Team, including Most Valuable Player Addie Schmitz. Other Titans named to the squad were Emily Burg, Mallory Knight and Maddie Morris.

UW-Oshkosh won The College of St. Scholastica hosted event by going 1-0-1 in its two matches, including a 1-1 overtime tie with Luther College (Iowa) on Friday (Aug. 31).

UW-Oshkosh is off until it hosts St. Olaf College (Minn.) next Saturday (Sept. 8) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
