Titans Play To Season-Opening Tie With Norse

Mallory Knight scored a match-tying goal in the game's 77th minute as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team opened its 2018 season with a 1-1 overtime result against Luther College (Iowa) on Friday (Aug. 31) in Duluth, Minn.

The teams followed Knight's second career goal by going scoreless during the next 13 minutes of regulation and the two 10-minute overtime sessions. It was the second straight season-opening tie for the Titans, who played to a scoreless debate with Goucher College (Md.) a year ago.

Luther College (0-0-1), which was playing UW-Oshkosh for the first time since the 1999 season, broke a scoreless contest with Hanna Christopher's goal during the 49th minute (48:23) of action. Christopher earned her goal with the help of a pass from Hailey Sanchez.

The Norse held their slim advantage until Knight scored at the 76:47 mark of the match.

The first half went scoreless despite eight shots attempted by UW-Oshkosh (0-0-1) and six by Luther College. The Titans managed just seven shots during the final 65 minutes of play and the Norse only four. Neither team had a shot on goal in overtime.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Madelyn Runyan went the distance and saved five shots. She stopped three shots in the first half and two in the second.

Luther College goalie Kennedy Bergren also played the entire match. She saved seven shots, with six coming in the first half and one in the second.

UW-Oshkosh's 15 shots included four by Delaney Karl, three by Knight and two by Addie Schmitz. All three shots launched by Knight were on goal.

Luther College attempted 10 shots, with four released by Marta Springer, three by Christopher and two by Lizzy De Prenger.

The all-time series between the teams is tied at 2-2-2.

UW-Oshkosh remains in Duluth for a match against The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) on Saturday (Sept. 1). The Saints are the host of this weekend's Labor Day Challenge that UW-Oshkosh and Luther College are participating in.
